The Theory and Criticism of Virtual Texts

An Annotated Bibliography, 1988-1999

Virtual texts have emerged within the realm of the Internet as the predominant mode of global communication. But despite the pervasiveness of the Internet in nearly all aspects of contemporary life, no single resource has cataloged the ways in which numerous disciplines have investigated and critiqued virtual texts. This bibliography provides more than 1500 annotated entries for books, articles, dissertations, and electronic resources on virtual texts published between 1988 and 1999. It explores such topics as the history and development of virtual communication, visualization studies, discourse studies, information design, computer-mediated communication and education, and privacy and intellectual property issues. Entries are arranged alphabetically within topical chapters, and extensive indexes facilitate easy access.

The Politics of Second Generation Discrimination in American Indian Education

Incidence, Explanation, and Mitigating Strategies

Academic grouping techniques are often subtle methods of discrimination that allow schools to sort students into homogenous groups. Findings indicate that American Indian students are overrepresented in lower-ability special education classes and in suspensions. Conversely, American Indian students are underrepresented in gifted classes and in graduations. A model, including American Indian representation, education, and income, as well as school district size, explains the amount of second generation discrimination faced by American Indian students. School districts that have greater American Indian political power have greater political representation on the school board and hence greater representation in school administration and in classrooms. The most important and consistent factor limiting the amount of second generation discrimination that American Indian students experience is the presence of American Indian teachers.

critics of academic grouping is Robert Slavin. His meta-analysis of numerous

Cooperative Learning for Higher Education Faculty

This practical, how-to book on co-operative learning is designed to serve as a resource for faculty members at colleges and universities. It offers an overview of the co-operative learning process, including its rationale, its research base, its value, and its practical implementation. The authors also describe a variety of approaches to co-operative learning drawn from complementary movements such as classroom research, writing across-the-curriculum, computer technology and critical thinking. They begin with a basic structure for implementing a co-operative learning programme, then move progressively through more complex activities. Numerous examples of actual co-operative learning programmes are included which span a wide variety of disciplines. These examples underscore how a successful programme can bolster student achievement, increase self-esteem, and foster the spirit of teamwork. This book should appeal to those new to the cooperative learning process, as well as to established practitioners in the field.
