The Effectiveness of Promotion Agencies at Attracting Foreign Direct Investment

Investment promotion agencies (IPAs) exist in almost all countries around the world, but there has been no global attempt to determine whether they have been able to significantly influence the investor's decision to locate in one country rather than another. 'The Effectiveness of Promotion Agencies at Attracting Foreign Direct Investment' is the first empirical study of the effectiveness of these agencies in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI).This study finds that promotion is unambiguously associated with greater FDI flows. The effectiveness of promotion, however, depends on: • the quality of the investment climate, market size • the level of development of the country • the IPA's budget and type of activities it carries out • communication with the highest level of policymakers and support from the private sector. An important resource, 'The Effectiveness of Promotion Agencies at Attracting Foreign Direct Investment' provides many lessons about how to carry out effective investment promotion.

The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Number Theory

This book is based on the AMS Short Course, The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Number Theory, held in Orono, Maine, in August 1991. This Short Course provided some views into the great breadth of applications of number theory outside cryptology and highlighted the power and applicability of number-theoretic ideas. Because number theory is one of the most accessible areas of mathematics, this book will appeal to a general mathematical audience as well as to researchers in other areas of science and engineering who wish to learn how number theory is being applied outside of mathematics. All of the chapters are written by leading specialists in number theory and provides excellent introduction to various applications.

how it relates to statistical mechanics. Also it must be noted at the onset that this

Number Theory. The course description suggests that thirty years ago all

Though he has lived in New York City for the past 40 years, his art still reflects the experiences and memories he associates with his family life in the South (he still maintains a studio in Georgia).

58) The second visit he remembered was made by Governor Herman Tal- madge
. Benny, like many other students, was incensed to learn that the governor was
coming to their campus and that all students were required to attend his speech
in the college chapel. As he explained: "He and his father, Eugene Talmadge,
had been the epitome of racism all my life; the name Talmadge was synonymous
with racism. Every gubernatorial campaign run by the Talmadges was laden with
