Atmospheric Sulfur and Nitrogen Oxides

Eastern North American Source-Receptor Relationships

Atmospheric Sulfur and Nitrogen Oxides provides a thorough synthesis of the research on atmospheric sulfur and nitrogen oxide chemistry on geographically large scales, with special emphasis on the methods and difficulties of establishing source-receptor relationships. The book addresses the importance of long-range air transport, the role of ozone and oxidant chemistry, and it examines analytical methods and pollutant transport models. This text specifically covers:

THEORETICAL INFERENCE OF SOURCERECEPTOR RELATIONSHIPS
OVERVIEW By their nature, observations give only a very limited picture of
atmospheric or deposition conditions in time and space. Fixed station
measurements are limited in their areal representativeness; the degree of their
regional representativeness is not known. The uncertainty in representativeness

Statistical Mechanics of Lattice Systems

Volume 2: Exact, Series and Renormalization Group Methods

This two-volume work provides a comprehensive study of the statistical mechanics of lattice models. It introduces the reader to the main areas in statistical mechanics and the theory of phase transitions. The development is built on a firm mathematical and physical basis. Volume 1 contains an account of mean-field and cluster variation methods successfully used in many applications in solid-state physics and theoretical chemistry as well as an account of exact results for the Ising and six-vertex models and those derivable by transformation methods. Volume 2 includes extensive treatments of scaling theory, algebraic and real-space renormalization group methods and the eight-vertex model. It also includes an account of series methods and a treatment of dimer assemblies.

Volume 2: Exact, Series and Renormalization Group Methods David Lavis,
George M. Bell. 4. Algebraic Methods in Statistical Mechanics 4.1 Introduction
There are rather few models in statistical mechanics which have been solved
exactly and many of these can be formulated in vertex form (see Chap. 5 and
Baxter 1982a). In the absence of such solutions, two alternative methods of attack
have been to determine 'rigorous' conditions for the existence of phase
transitions, or bounds ...

Some Thoughts on the Big Questions

This book is a series of essays (13) about some of the more important questions in philosophy and religion. The essays represent the author's take on the most reasonable answers to these questions as well as the justifications for those answers. They are written in an essay form and a colloquial style rather than in the style of a professional journal article in the hope of easing the reader's way through them and rewarding his/her interest and curiosity. No dogmatism here, just a reflective and open attempt to discern what is the case with regard to some perennial and serious issues which commonly confront us.

M. BROCKWAY,. PH.D.,. (Philosophy, University of Wisconsin), spent many years
in the classroom both here in the U.S. and in Switzerland, making Philosophy
and other subjects come alive for his students. Trained as a Jesuit, he has read
deeply in the classics and the Philosophy of Religion, especially, in recent years,
in the area of Buddhist studies. Dr. Brockway also spent time in the private sector
first as an administrator in the health care sector and then over twelve years in

Hyperthermia and Cancer

Hyperthermia as a tool for the treatment of malignant disease is rapidly becoming a clinical reality. In this book I am attempting to summarize the known biological and physical underpinnings that have led to this development. I also present a compilation of existing clinical results, limited as these are. My aim is to provide oncologists and other physicians with up-to-date information on this modality, which is both new and old, as well as to make available to biologists, physicists and engineers sum maries of currently available information on specific areas of hyperthermic research. Many people have helped me with this book. Specifically, thanks are due to Drs. William Dewey, Jean Dutreix, Peter Fessenden, Gloria Li, and Jane Marmor. Their suggestions have been invaluable. I hope that not too many errors and omissions have crept into the volume, but in any case, for these I have only myself to blame. I also wish to express my appreciation to David Betten and Marie Graham for their help. Most of this material was written while I was on sabbatical leave on the shores of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. There I enjoyed the hospitality of a gracious, friendly, and proud people who deserve better than fate seems to have in store for them.

drugs, all of which greatly increase the action of heat, are the naturally occurring
polyamines putrescine, spermidine, and spermine (Gerner and Russell, 1977).
Addition to the medium of as low as 10 * M spermidine or spermine measurably
enhances the killing of Chinese hamster cells (Gerner et al., 1980). These agents
are very likely not of clinical interest, but their study may reveal information about
