The Scientific Programmer's Toolkit: Turbo Pascal Edition presents a complete software environment for anyone writing programs in mathematical, engineering, or science areas. This toolkit package is designed for use with Turbo Pascal, the de facto standard Pascal system for PC and compatible machines. The book and its software provides an integrated software library of programming tools. The programs and routines fall into three categories: graphical, mathematical, and utilities. Routines are further subdivided into three levels that reflect the experience of the user. For graphics and text handling routines there is also a Level 0, which provides an interface to the machine operating system. By using hierarchically structured routines, the clearly written text, and a wide range of example programs, software users can construct a user-friendly interface with minimal effort. The levels structure makes it easy for newcomers to use the Toolkit, and with growing experience, users can achieve more elaborate effects. The Scientific Programmer's Toolkit will be useful to consultants, researchers, and students in any quantitative profession or science, in private or public sector research establishments, or in secondary and higher education.

puter system. In 1971 one computer system had a Pascal compiler. By 1974 the number had grown to 10 and in 1979 there were more than 80. Pascal is always available on those ubiquitous breeds of computer systems: personal computers andl professional workstations. Questions arising out of the Southampton Symposium on Pascal in 1977 [Reference 10] began the first organized effort to write an officially sanctioned, international Pascal Standard. Participants sought to consolidate the list of questions that naturally arose when people tried to implement Pascal compilers using definitions found in the Pascal User Manual and Report. That effort culminated in the ISO 7185 Pascal Standard [Reference 11] which officially defines Pascal and necessitated the revision of this book. We have chosen to modify the User Manual and the Report with respect to the Standard - not to make this book a substitute for the Standard. As a result this book retains much of its readability and elegance which, we believe, set it apart from the Standard. We updated the syntactic notation to Niklaus Wirth's EBNF and improved the style of programs in the User Manual. For the convenience of readers familiar with previous editions of this book, we have included Appendix E which summarizes the changes necessitated by the Standard.

Resisting the notion that there is a single English language arts curriculum that all schools can or should follow, this book focuses on processes for designing, implementing, and evaluating curriculums suited to the needs of individual schools and students. Part 1 of the book (The English Language Arts Curriculum in the 1990s), provides the theoretical underpinnings for this approach to curriculum. It begins with a historical overview of the evolution of English language arts programs. It then describes the origins of a "new English" that has been emerging over the past 3 decades and outlines its most promising characteristics. Part 2 of the book (Successful Curriculum Development in the English Language Arts), presents current curriculums and patterns of development. One chapter reports a survey of national Centers of Excellence in English in which curriculum makers describe the processes that led to their successful programs. A second chapter presents first-person narratives by four curriculum leaders from around the United States, describing a range of curriculum problems. Part 3 of the book (A Curriculum Developer's Handbook), offers a variety of tasks that individual curriculum developers and curriculum teams can undertake.
