Ada anggapan bahwa agama tidak mampu menggerakkan kehidupan ekonomi, lebih-lebih ekonomi kapitalis. Ini didasarkan pada pemiki- ran bahwa agama dan ekonomi merupakan dua ranah yang memiliki titik sentral dan tujuan berbeda. Di antara keduanya, selamanya tidak akan pernah sejalan. Max Weber kemudian muncul dengan Die Protestant Ethik Under Giest Des Kapitalis (Etika Protestan dan Semangat Kapitalis), sebuah pemikiran baru yang seolah menegasikan anggapan tersebut. Ia dengan sangat baik menunjukkan kaitan yang erat antara doktrin-doktrin agama yang puritan dengan fakta-fakta sosial, terutama dalam perkembangan industri modern sehingga melahirkan corak dan ragam nilai yang menjadi tolok ukur keberhasilan individu; keberhasilan di dunia ialah cerminan kebahagiaan di akhirat. Melalui buku fenomenal ini, Max Weber tidak sekadar mengung- kapkan pemikiran-pemikirannya yang brilian terkait dengan relasi antara agama dan kehidupan sosial masyarakat modern.
