Introduction to Spanish/English Linguistics

This textbook is for three groups of people involved with Spanish: first, for the students enrolled in Spanish/English linguistics courses; second, for college and university librarians; and third, for every Spanish language teacher/professor. We suggest that those who have courses of this type consider this book as a text for those classes. For those that do not have them, we recommend that you offer them and use this book. We also believe that it would also be an ideal book for libraries in which people interested in the topic can go to find out information, since there are no available texts as comprehensive as this one. It is also a book that all Spanish teachers/professors should have on their desks and shelves for reference purposes, being that it contains a lot of information about linguistics and grammar.

The Country of Kent, situated in the south-east corner of England, is famous for the “white cliffs of Dover” which face the French coast only 20 miles away. In the centre of the Country there is an area known as The Weald, often referred to as “the garden of England” as it is abundant in the growing of fruit of all kinds and until the 1970’s grew most of the hops used in the production of English beer. Our fictional story concerns the lives of a variety of residents in a typical village in this area immediately prior to the 2nd World War and throughout until its end in 1945; their romance, successes, failures, disappointments and tragedies. The Principles of Islamic Banking

This book is about the principles of Islamic banking. It explains the prohibition of Riba, and how the prohibition of usury was common to all monotheist religions. The use of Islamic laws in banking can bring together investors and managers; and also to explain mudarabah which is an arrangement where an investor entrusts his capital or merchandise to an agent. The book explains the belief of economic progress; that development does not imply Westernization. The encouragement of private sector activity is not, however, accompanied by any deliberate policy of fostering competition. The authority in an Islamic state is an interest that extends not only to criminal law, but also to the commercial law which affects both local and foreign companies. Although the law is usually applied consistently within individual countries, there is less consistency among Islamic states. The Koran and the sunnah, of course, provide the basis of the law in all Islamic states, but interpretation varies considerably. It finally explains the greatest challenge to the world of Islamic commerce in the 20thcentury is, to transform the classical mudarabah into an equally smooth functioning and efficient modern Islamic bank with the potential of almost unlimited growth.

The name Samuel E. Turner, which Ive used for this book, belongsin realityto my maternal grandfather, but given the fact that he was laid to rest over fifty years ago, I doubt that hed much mind my borrowing it. After four previous books that were historical in nature, I decided that it was time to broaden my interests and have-a-go at fiction-writing (even though L.A. Cops is partially based on actual events and places in the Southwest). I am a product of the greater Los Angeles area, and prior to moving to northern California in the late 60s, I had worked in a bank in downtown L.A., spent several years as a cryptographer and historian (with the Air Force), graduated from a state university in the region, and was a secondary teacher in public schools in and around Los Angeles, then in Northern California for two more decades after relocating in the Sacramento area. Even though my wifeof 57 years--and I attended the same high school, we didnt meet until some years later. She and I are the parents of three great persons, and grandparents of four. Since retiring from the classroom in the early 90s, Ive spent time on the area waterways as a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, then when this became too strenuous, Ive devoted much of my free time to research and writinggenerally about Southern California and its residents.
