Data-adaptive Prediction with the Deletion/substitution/addition Algorithm

This doctoral dissertation concentrates on data-adaptive prediction of univariate outcomes. It is divided into six chapters. The first chapter is an introduction to loss-based estimation which serves as the foundation for the subsequent chapters. The second chapter introduces the Deletion/Substitution/Addition (D/S/A) algorithm for the prediction of an uncensored outcome with polynomial basis functions. The third chapter explains how the D/S/A algorithm can be used for the prediction of survival times, and it proposes an aggregation scheme for bagging the D/S/A algorithm. The fourth chapter introduces a Super Learner which selects an optimal learning method from various candidate learning methods where the D/S/A algorithm is just one example. The Super Learner is applied to an HIV-1 genotype-phenotype data set which tries to relate mutations in HIV-1 protease and reverse transcriptase to changes in in vitro susceptibility to antiretroviral drugs. The fifth chapter illustrates how to use the D/S/A algorithm for estimation of direct effects which was developed while working with an HIV-1 genotype-clinical outcome data set. Finally, the last chapter is a conclusion and offers suggestions for future work.

Family-owned Business IPOS

The Case of Saudi Arabia

In light of the ongoing restructuring of the Saudi economy, many of the Kingdom's family- owned businesses are contemplating going public. Analyzing thi s current trend is amongst this study's main objectives. The motivations and obsta cles facing family- owned businesses in their decision to go public are discussed. An empirical analysis of the returns realized by Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) on the Saudi Stock Market is also conducted. All studied IPOs are found to have achieved significant abnormal returns during the first month of trading. These returns ar e concentrated in the first week post- IPO. The exceptional performance achieved b y the only family- owned business included in the sample implies such firms' ability t o successfully compete on the Saudi Stock Market. Further research analyzing the performance of Saudi IPOs in general and that of family- owned businesses in par ticular, is necessary for a better understanding of this topic.

Business Ethics

A Core Competence in the 21st Century

This research project tackles the issue of business ethics and the challenge of ethical behavior which must be met by organizations and their managers if they a re truly concerned about survival and competitiveness. The study attempts to highlight the need to create awareness inside organizations as to how to drive and enforce ethical behavior though exploring t he various techniques available to institutionalize ethics. The main objective of this study is to provide valuable feedback and insight into the level of awareness about business ethics in Lebanon by collecting data from a sample of managers representing select Lebanese organizations. The study will sh ed light on the practices of these organizations regarding the promotion and institutionalization of ethical behavior. Finally, the main findings of this study emphasize the importance of creating awareness for ethics in Lebanese organizations. In fact, more effort on the part of these organizations must be demonstrated to promote and enforce ethical behavior and awareness among their members as well to capitalize on ethics as a core competen ce.

Changing Landscapes of Singapore

Old Tensions, New Discoveries

Changing Landscapes of Singapore illuminates both the social and the physical terrains of modern Singapore. Geographers use the term landscape to refer to visible surfaces and to the spatial dimension of social relations. Landscapes arise from particular historical circumstances, and in turn help shape social arrangements and possible courses of future development. The authors describe how the settings inhabited by various social groups in Singapore affect life experiences, and explore the impact of broader regional and international forces on Singapore. Written for non-specialists, the volume reflects fresh perspectives from the scholarship of Singaporean academics. Their work is sensitive to historical and geographical trends in the region, and also engages with broader theoretical themes.

An Introduction to Modern Analysis

Examining the basic principles in real analysis and their applications, this text provides a self-contained resource for graduate and advanced undergraduate courses. It contains independent chapters aimed at various fields of application, enhanced by highly advanced graphics and results explained and supplemented with practical and theoretical exercises. The presentation of the book is meant to provide natural connections to classical fields of applications such as Fourier analysis or statistics. However, the book also covers modern areas of research, including new and seminal results in the area of functional analysis.

Chinese-English, English-Chinese

The poet is the sayer, the namer, and represents beauty. He is a sovereign, and stands on the centre.--Ralph Waldo Emerson, from "The Poet" "[The poet] is a seer.... he is individual... he is complete in himself.... the others are as good as he, only he sees it and they do not. He is not one of the chorus. "--Walt Whitman, from the preface to Leaves of Grass Poetry has always given rise to interpretation, judgment, and controversy. Indeed, the history of poetry criticism is as rich and varied a journey as the history of poetry itself. But classic writings such as Emerson's essay "The Poet" and Whitman's preface to Leaves of Grass serve as more than a critical "call and response": the works are striking examples of how the finest poets themselves have written on poetics and the works of their peers and predecessors--revealing, in the process, much about the theory and passion behind their own works. Spanning thousands of years and including thirty-three of the most influential critical essays ever written, Classic Writings on Poetry is the first major anthology of criticism devoted exclusively to poetry. Beginning with a survey of the history of poetics and providing an introduction and brief biography for each reading, esteemed poet and critic William Harmon takes readers from Plato's Republic and Aristotle's Poetics to the Norse mythology of Snorri Sturluson's Skáldskaparmál. John Dryden's An Essay of Dramatic Poesy and Shelley's A Defence of Poetry are included, as is an excerpt from Elizabeth Barrett Browning's verse novel Aurora Leigh, arriving, finally, at the modernist sensibility of "Poetic Reality and Critical Unreality," by Laura (Riding) Jackson. For anyone interested in the art and artifice of poetry, Classic Writings on Poetry is a journey well worth taking.
