A World War II Marine's Account of Facing a Veteran Enemy at Guadalcanal, the Solomons and Okinawa

Right after Pearl Harbor, the author joined the Marines at 17. After boot camp, he went to the First Marine Division, taking part in some of the bloodiest fighting in the Pacific, including the landing on Okinawa where he was wounded. Wahhabi Islam : From Revival and Reform to Global Jihad

From Revival and Reform to Global Jihad

Before 9/11, few Westerners had heard of Wahhabism. Today, it is a household word. Frequently mentioned in association with Osama bin Laden, Wahhabism is portrayed by the media and public officials as an intolerant, puritanical, militant interpretation of Islam that calls for the wholesale destruction of the West in a jihad of global proportions. In the first study ever undertaken of the writings of Wahhabism's founder, Muhammad Ibn Abd al-Wahhab (1702-1791), Natana DeLong-Bas shatters these stereotypes and misconceptions. Her reading of Ibn Abd al-Wahhab's works produces a revisionist thesis: Ibn Abd al-Wahhab was not the godfather of contemporary terrorist movements. Rather, he was a voice of reform, reflecting mainstream 18th-century Islamic thought. His vision of Islamic society was based upon a monotheism in which Muslims, Christians and Jews were to enjoy peaceful co-existence and cooperative commercial and treaty relations. Eschewing medieval interpretations of the Quran and hadith (sayings and deeds of the prophet Muhammad), Ibn Abd al-Wahhab called for direct, historically contextualized interpretation of scripture by both women and men. His understanding of theology and Islamic law was rooted in Quranic values, rather than literal interpretations. A strong proponent of women's rights, he called for a balance of rights between women and men both within marriage and in access to education and public space. In the most comprehensive study of Ibn Abd al-Wahhab's interpretation of jihad ever written, DeLong-Bas details a vision in which jihad is strictly limited to the self-defense of the Muslim community against military aggression. Contemporary extremists like Osama bin Laden do not have their origins in Wahhabism, she shows. The hallmark jihadi focus on a cult of martyrdom, the strict division of the world into two necessarily opposing spheres, the wholescale destruction of both civilian life and property, and the call for global jihad are entirely absent from Ibn Abd al-Wahhab's writings. Instead, the militant stance of contemporary jihadism lies in adherence to the writings of the medieval scholar, Ibn Taymiyya, and the 20th century Egyptian radical, Sayyid Qutb. This pathbreaking book fills an enormous gap in the literature about Wahhabism by returning to the original writings of its founder. Bound to be controversial, it will be impossible to ignore.

The second major point was recognition of Muhammad's explicit permission to
seek the opinion of a mufti in cases that are not clear. A mufti is a scholar who
serves as both a legal and religious consultant and adviser by issuing fatawa (
sing. fatwa), or legal opinions, to either judges (qadis) or to private individuals on
request. The opinion of the mufti is not considered to be binding in court but offers
a recommendation as to how a particular situation is to be handled. The mufti's

The Structure of Learning Processes

This book brings together a variety of contemporary approaches to learning that by and large follow the structuralist path to understand learning, a path both ecological and dynamic. The book views the learning processes as they take place in the course of personenvironment relationships.

1985, pp. 58ff.). In a metaanalysis based on 27 studies (47 correlations, 2,231
subjects), Schneider (1985) could confirm this trend: Studies referring to the
executive aspect of metaknowledge on average show higher correlations than
studies that test the influence of task and strategy knowledge on learning/memory
performance (even in this type of study, however, medium correlations could be
demonstrated). The overall correlation coefficient between metacognition and
memory was ...

The Digital Puritan - Vol.IV, No.2

The Digital Puritan is a quarterly digest of carefully selected Puritan works which provides a steady diet of sound Puritan teaching. The language has been gently modernised to render it more readable, while still retaining much of the flavour and character of the original text. Hundreds of helpful notes and Scripture references (in the English Standard Version®) are included as end-notes; no internet connection is needed. The following articles appear in this summer 2014 edition: 1. Self-Denial – in which Isaac Ambrose expounds Mark 8:34, showing that self-denial must be a cardinal feature of Christ’s true disciples. 2. The Almost Christian – George Whitefield shows from Acts 26:28 that having the trappings of religion is not the same thing as having true saving faith. 3. God’s Regard for His Own Glory, Seen in the Saving of Sinners – in which Stephen Charnock illustrates the rich glory of God as can only be seen in his redemption of sinful men. 4. Charity, in Respect of Other Men’s Sins – John Howe teaches from 1 Corinthians 13:6 that believers should never rejoice over the failings or misfortunes of others, and should be predisposed to grant them the benefit of the doubt. 5. A Word to the Aged – comforting and insightful teaching from William Bridge for those who have nearly run their course. The Puritans in Verse: A Psalm of Praise – Richard Baxter.

The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Number Theory

This book is based on the AMS Short Course, The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Number Theory, held in Orono, Maine, in August 1991. This Short Course provided some views into the great breadth of applications of number theory outside cryptology and highlighted the power and applicability of number-theoretic ideas. Because number theory is one of the most accessible areas of mathematics, this book will appeal to a general mathematical audience as well as to researchers in other areas of science and engineering who wish to learn how number theory is being applied outside of mathematics. All of the chapters are written by leading specialists in number theory and provides excellent introduction to various applications.

title implies. We shall concern ourselves only with additive number theory and
how it relates to statistical mechanics. Also it must be noted at the onset that this
paper was presented in a session entitled The Unreasonable Effectiveness of
Number Theory. The course description suggests that thirty years ago all
