The translation presented here of the Mushaf as-suwar (The Book of Pictures) into English is its first translation into a European language. It is the result of careful and repeated distillation work over a period of twenty years, encouraged by Dr. Marie-Louise von Franz. The text is a dialogue between the teacher Zosimos and his beloved student Theosebeia, explaining to her the symbolic meaning of the alchemical work. The unique contribution of this text is its forty-two pictures, mostly in color, that Zosimos drew for Theosebeia. These pictures are, as is demonstrated in the introduction written by Theodor Abt, the earliest alchemical pictures known, and they are the source of the picture series given in the Rosarium and of the Mutus Liber. The whole dialogue is the earliest known psychological dialogue concerning transference and countertransference.
Postmodern Public Policy introduces new ways of investigating the urgent difficulties confronting the public sector. The second half of the twentieth century saw approaches to public administration, public policy, and public management dominated by technical-instrumental thought that aspired to neutrality, objectivity, and managerialism. This form of social science has contributed to a public sector where policy debates have been reduced to "bumper-sticker" slogans, a citizenry largely alienated and distant from government, and analysis that ignores history and context and eschews the lived experiences of actual people. Hugh T. Miller brings together the latest thinking from epistemology, evolutionary theory, and discourse theory in an accessible and useful manner to emphasize how a postmodern approach offers the possibility of well-considered, pragmatic solutions grounded in political pluralism and social interaction between public service professionals and community members.
"A comparative research design was used to examine the effects of Think-Pair-Share on the participation and engagement of second grade students during whole group discussion about literature. The purpose of this action research study was to investigate the following research questions: Can the instructional strategy, Think-Pair-Share, improve the voluntary participation of second grade students during whole group discussion about literature? Will the use of Think-Pair-Share increase students. on-task behavior during whole group discussion? Two instructional strategies (Initiate-Response-Evaluate and Think-Pair-Share) were implemented during two separate conditions to observe and compare students' behavioral responses to each during literary discussion in the classroom. During each condition, two observation techniques were used to collect data. The measures for this study included a participation observation which measured incidents of students' voluntary hand-raising and an at-task analysis observation which measured students' on and off task behavior. The results indicated that Think-Pair-Share had a positive effect on students' voluntary participation, though it did not increase students. on-task behavior" -- Abstract, p. 1.
