The Concepts and Logic of Classical Thermodynamics as a Theory of Heat Engines

Rigorously Constructed upon the Foundation Laid by S. Carnot and F. Reech

Mon but n'a jamais be de m'occuper des ces matieres comme physicien, mais seulement comme /ogicien ... F. REECH, 1856 I do not think it possible to write the history of a science until that science itself shall have been understood, thanks to a clear, explicit, and decent logical structure. The exuberance of dim, involute, and undisciplined his torical essays upon classical thermodynamics reflects the confusion of the theory itself. Thermodynamics, despite its long history, has never had the benefit of a magisterial synthesis like that which EULER gave to hydro dynamics in 1757 or that which MAXWELL gave to electromagnetism in 1873; the expositions in the works of discovery in thermodynamics stand a pole apart from the pellucid directness of the notes in which CAUCHY presented his creation and development of the theory of elasticity from 1822 to 1845. Thermodynamics was born in obscurity and disorder, not to say confusion, and there the common presentations of it have remained. With this tractate I aim to provide a simple logical structure for the classical thermodynamics of homogeneous fluid bodies. Like any logical structure, it is only one of many possible ones. I think it is as simple and pretty as can be.

Off-road Vehicle Dynamics

Analysis, Modelling and Optimization

This book deals with the analysis of off-road vehicle dynamics from kinetics and kinematics perspectives and the performance of vehicle traversing over rough and irregular terrain. The authors consider the wheel performance, soil-tire interactions and their interface, tractive performance of the vehicle, ride comfort, stability over maneuvering, transient and steady state conditions of the vehicle traversing, modeling the aforementioned aspects and optimization from energetic and vehicle mobility perspectives. This book brings novel figures for the transient dynamics and original wheel terrain dynamics at on-the-go condition.

Statistical Models for Strategic Management

Statistical Models for Strategic Management offers practical guidance in the use of statistical models for empirical research in strategic management. The contributions in this edited volume come from distinguished researchers in the field of Strategic Management, and provide illustration of most statistical models that are relevant for strategy research. The book is divided into four major topical areas: Strategic Analysis and Firm Strategies; The Resource-Based View of the Firm; Transaction Costs, Agency Theory, and the Boundaries of the Firm; and Corporate Alliances, Acquisitions and Networks.

Strategic Management in Islamic Finance

Alexander von Pock develops a holistic conceptual framework for identifying and testing key success factors of Islamic financial institutions. The framework integrates insights into the current practices of Islamic finance, a variety of theories – namely the market-based view, the resource-based view, and, to some extent, New Institutional Economics approaches – as well as previous research from the fields of strategic management and economics. The author is testing the theoretical framework empirically in a survey of 36 major Islamic financial institutions based in the Gulf Cooperation Council area and in Malaysia.

The statements of proposition 4 that are not supported by the analysis are the
following: First, profitability (ROE) is positively impacted by product differentiation
strategy, marketing and sales differentiation strategy, focus strategy, and ...

Strategic Management of Global Manufacturing Networks

Aligning Strategy, Configuration, and Coordination

The preceding process of globalization and the continuously rising competitive pressure on manufacturing companies in more developed economies unveiled the limits of classical site-focused optimization approaches. The focus of network optimization shifts ever more towards an integrative view of manufacturing networks, striving for a harmonization of the strategy-, configuration- and coordination levels. This book presents such an integrative approach to the strategic management of manufacturing networks. Besides strategic network requirements, this book discusses the derivation of an optimal global footprint and the optimization of network coordination activities. Special attention is paid to the site roles concept, especially to the concept of 'lead factory'. A large number of up-to-date cases from the producing industry enrich the book and provide the reader with vivid examples for the application of the presented concepts. Hence, this book is a must-read for both practitioners and academic researchers.

This chapter completes the book – for the time being – with a look at the
institutionalisation of network management and a short recap. Regarding
institutionalisation, we want to cover the role of process owners in particular,
which could play a key role in establishing network management organisationally
, much like OPEX initiatives. As was noted previously, we provide a further
collection of case studies from industry projects carried out by us in the appendix,
to help illustrate the ...

Strategic Management of Marine Ecosystems

Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Strategic Management of Marine Ecosystems, Nice, France, 1-11 October, 2003

The demand for advanced management methods and tools for marine ecosystems is increasing worldwide. Today, many marine ecosystems are significantly affected by disastrous pollution from industrial, agricultural, municipal, transportational, and other anthropogenic sources. The issues of environmental integrity are especially acute in the Mediterranean and Red Sea basins, the cradle of modern civilization. The drying of the Dead Sea is one of the most vivid examples of environmental disintegration with severe negative consequences on the ecology, industry, and wildlife in the area. Strategic management and coordination of international remedial and restoration efforts is required to improve environmental conditions of marine ecosystems in the Middle East as well as in other areas. The NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) held in Nice in October 2003 was designed to: (1) provide a discussion forum for the latest developments in the field of environmentally-conscious strategic management of marine environments, and (2) integrate expertise of ecologists, biologists, economists, and managers from European, American, Canadian, Russian, and Israeli organizations in developing a framework for strategic management of marine ecosystems. The ASI addressed the following issues: Key environmental management problems in exploited marine ecosystems; Measuring and monitoring of municipal, industrial, and agricultural effluents; Global contamination of seawaters and required remedial efforts; Supply Chain Management approach for strategic coastal zones management and planning; Development of environmentally friendly technologies for coastal zone development; Modeling for sustainable aquaculture; and Social, political, and economic challenges in marine ecosystem management.

Strategic Management of the Manufacturing Value Chain

Proceedings of the International Conference of the Manufacturing Value-Chain August ‘98, Troon, Scotland, UK

Today the Scottish electronics industry employs 40,000 people directly and a further 30,000 in the supply infrastructure. There are now more than 550 electronic manufacturing and supplier companies in ' Silicon Glen'. In terms of the contribution to the economy, electronics is by far the most valuable industry. Its value in 1996 was approximately £ 10billion and accounted for more than half of Scotland's exports. The major product groupings within the industry include: • PCs, laptops and workstations • Disk drives, cable harnessing • Printers, keyboards and peripherals • Semiconductor devices and PCBs • TV, VCRs, CDs, stereos and other consumer electronics • Cellular phones and telecommunications products • A TMs and funds transfer systems • Networking and security systems • Navigation and sonar systems • Microwave products • Power supplies • Software and compilers Many of these companies are multi-national OEMs, who came to Scotland as inward investing companies. Early inward investing companies were from USA, followed by companies from Japan, and more recently from Taiwan and Korea. An important segment of the industry is involved in the manufacture of computers, including IBM, Compaq, Digital and Sun. In fact approximately 40% of the PCs sold in Europe are built in Scotland. With five of the world's top eight computer manufacturers locating a manufacturing base in Scotland there has been an attraction for foreign companies keen to provide service for these multinationals. In 1995/96 the supply base output was worth £1.

Strategic Management of Professional Service Firms

Theory and Practice

Managing strategies for professional service firms is an important and complex activity. The main issues in this book cover the core management principles for service firms in a comprehensive way. Based on current research findings it includes the management of service quality, knowledge and marketing as well as people, organizational and strategic issues. In understanding critical resources managers and partners will be able to effectively develop and exploit them. The book contains practical advice and offers a profound insight into the managerial excellence of service companies.

Management. Service quality is a strategically important resource in professional
service firms. It leads to business deals and – in a second step – generates
economic profits. Strong market developments and company diversification have
recently put more emphasis on the quality of the services provided as a possible
differentiation aspect than before. Only if a professional service firm is able to
stand out amongst competitors by continuously delivering quality services, will it
be ...

Strategic Management

This book is the original text by H. Igor Ansoff, the pioneer of Strategic Management'. This is the founding work on Strategic Management, a concept at the core of modern business. This book is a ground-breaking approach to modelling strategic capability and strategic choice that has influenced an entire generation of managers and strategists.

Eventually he joined the management side of Lockheed. Here he led a
diversification task force and as manager transformed an ailing engineering
division, restoring it to profitability. Later Ansoff moved to academia. In 1969 he
founded Vanderbilt University's Graduate School of Management where, despite
much resistance, he insisted on a multinational orientation. He also conducted
research demonstrating that firms which diversify using strategic planning do
better than those that ...
