The Verbal System in the Hebrew Text of Ben Sira

This volume provides a comprehensive analysis of the verbal system in the extant Hebrew witnesses of Ben Sira. It is an important contribution both to Ben Sira studies and to the debate about the tenses in Classical Hebrew.

Language and Interpretation in the Syriac Text of Ben Sira

A Comparative Linguistic and Literary Study

After subjecting the Syriac translation of Ben Sira to traditional philological analysis the author conducts computer-assisted linguistic studies of phrases, clauses and texts. He reaches particularly interesting proposals for a corpus-based description of phrase structure based on a so-called maximum matrix.

Corpus Linguistics and Textual History

A Computer-assisted Interdisciplinary Approach to the Peshiṭta

Over the years the use of computers for research has become increasingly important in Biblical Studies. However, a combination of computational linguistics with diachronic text-critical and text-historical approaches has hardly ever taken place. Quite often, there is mutual misunderstanding between computational linguistics and more traditional approaches in the field of linguistics and textual analysis. For example, in computer-assisted research of modern text corpora it is common to treat the text as an unequivocal and unidimensional sequence of characters. In Biblical Studies, however, either text is considered an abstraction, the result of a scholarly reconstruction based on the extant textual witnesses. Here a fundamental difference in approach reveals itself. The present volume tries to overcome the misunderstanding between the various disciplines and to establish how a fruitful interaction of information technology, linguistics and textual criticism, can contribute to the analysis of ancient texts. It addresses questions concerning the confrontation between synchronic and diachronic approaches, the role of linguistic analysis in the interpretation of texts, and the interaction of linguistic theory and the analysis of linguistic data. The first section of this volume contains the papers presented at the CALAP seminar 2003. In the second section different aspects of the interdisciplinary analysis are applied to a selected passage from the Peshitta of Kings.

Acts of Teaching: How to Teach Writing: A Text, A Reader, A Narrative, 2nd Edition

Carroll and Wilson have taken their successful Acts of Teaching into the 21st Century with this totally revised second edition. While maintaining the best of Acts, Acts II moves the paradigm into the global age. Comprehensive, innovative, and practical, and with forewords by two of the most noted scholars in the field, Janet Emig and Edmund J. Farrell, this text offers educators a powerful approach to teaching writing. Rather than repetitive exercises, it focuses on engagement and interaction so students grapple with words and experiences to make meaning. In Acts II the writing process and assessment gain a new dimension. Recent research supports its content and strategies while cognitive development and neurological theories, early literacy, inquiry, and writing as a mode of learning across all disciplines and grade levels have been invigorated. Topics include students, shifts and skills for the global age, the writing process, and assessment, three chapters on how to teach grammar within the writing process, collaboration, post writing, and publishing. This book meets the needs of anyone writing or teaching writing. Grades PreK-12.

They do not even teach it in isolation. They use writing as a process as an excuse
to cover their insufficient knowledge. The second group objects because writing
as a process minimizes worksheets and exercises in grammar books.
