This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Cooperative Information Systems, CIA'98, held in cognition with Agents World in July 1998 in Paris. The book presents nine invited contributions together with 14 revised full papers selected from a total of 54 submissions. The book is divided in parts on systems and applications; issues of design, querying, and communication; rational cooperation and electronic commerce; adaptive and collaborative information gathering; and mobile information agents in the internet.

"Global citizens choose to engage in electronic business every second of the day. The Internet has allowed for businesses to remain constantly open. All over the world people are able to conduct business quickly and cost effectively. Although the use of the Internet has significant benefits, there are also a number of risks. Most importantly there is a risk of the breach of personal security. This paper will use a patchwork design that consists of a case study and survey techniques to collect data on the use of business technologies by faculty and students at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). Each group will be issued the same survey to show the varying levels of participation in electronic business. Post collection, I propose that the data will show that although the majority of the RIT community engages in electronic business regularly, they remain concerned as to whether their information is being secured. I argue that both groups of faculty and students would like to see more federal involvement in electronic business to protect the average citizens' personal privacy rights."--Abstract.
Internet has played such a significant role in the world that there hardly a field of activity in life where it is not evident. The emergence of Internet is one of the hallmarks in the revolution triggered by the networking technology. Today, academic libraries are struggling to keep their place as the major source of inquiry in the face of emerging internet technology. Internet technology in academic libraries has revolutionized not only the way of disseminating information but also how users seek and access information. As a developing country like Bangladesh, internet facilities of higher academic institutions are not satisfactory. It is found that the services of different units of the selected university libraries are not sufficient to meet the needs of the respondent's information requirement.
