Renegotiating Polygamy in Indonesia

This book examines Islam and women’s everyday life, focusing in particular on the highly controversial issue of polygamy. It discusses the competing interpretations of the Qur’anic verses that are at the heart of Muslim controversies over polygamy, with some groups believing that Islam enshrines polygamy as a male right, others seeing it as permitted but discouraged in favour of monogamy, and other groups arguing that Islam implicitly prohibits polygamy. Based on detailed fieldwork conducted in Indonesia, it provides an empirically-based account of women’s lived experiences in polygamous marriages, describing the different perceptions of the practice and strategies in dealing with it. It also considers the impact of changing public policy, in particular Indonesia’s 1974 Marriage Law which restricted the practice of polygamy. It shows that, in fact, this law has not resulted in widespread adherence, and considers how public policy could be modified to increase its effectiveness in affecting behaviour in everyday life. Overall, the book argues that polygamy has been a source of injustice towards women and children, that this is against Islamic teaching, and that a just Islamic law would need to call for the abolition of polygamy.

Prediction of biopharmaceutical facility fit issues using decision tree analysis

The impact of upstream and downstream process fluctuations in bioprocesses becomes more pronounced during technology transfer of pilot scale processes into large-scale facilities. Mismatches in equipment sizes upon scale-up combined with process fluctuations can lead to discarding expensive product. Understanding and predicting the root causes of product loss is critical to determining the necessary facility modifications required to meet manufacturing targets. In this work, a decision tree classification method, CART (classification and regression tree), was used to interrogate stochastic Monte Carlo simulation datasets that mimic batch fluctuations in industrial biopharmaceutical batch processes. The resulting binary decision tree not only reveals the impact of process fluctuations on product mass loss but also extracts a series of if-then rules on the critical combinations of factors that lead to unacceptable mass loss levels. The decision tree analysis therefore allows rapid prediction of the likelihood of facility fit issues as well as the batch characteristics that result in product loss.

Oleh karena itu, adanya laboratorium sangat signifikan untuk mendukung pembelajaran sains yang terarah dan terpadu. Dalam implementasinya, berbagai permasalahan yang terkait sains dapat diselesaikan dalam laboratorium. Laboratorium adalah tempat dimana seseorang melakukan riset ilmiah, pengukuran atau pelatihan ilmiah. Kebutuhan sarana laboratorium dari berbagai disiplin ilmu akan menjadi efektif apabila dilakukan secara terintegrasi. Salah satu pendekatan dalam pembelajaran yang terintegrasi adalah STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). STEM memungkin-kan pembelajar untuk mempelajari konsep akademik secara tepat dengan menerapkan 4 disiplin ilmu yaitu, Sains, Teknologi, Keahlian Teknik dan Matematika. Buku ini disusun sebagai salah satu tanggung jawab dan cinta kami dalam Pusat Studi Sains – Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) untuk kemajuan pendidikan Indonesia.
