Berbicara tentang Psikologi Komunikasi, tidak dapat dilepaskan dengan komunikasi itu sendiri. Dalam sejarah perkembangan komunikasi juga banyak melibatkan banyak tokoh Psikologi di dalamnya. Setidaknya ada 3 (tiga) orang pakar Psikologi yang juga diakui sebagai Bapak Komunikasi, yaitu Carl I. Hovland, Paul Lazarfeld dan Kurt Lewin. Meskipun demikian, komunikasi tidak menjadi bagian dalam subdisiplin keilmuan psikologi. Komunikasi menembus batas atau sekat banyak disiplin ilmu, dikarenakan komunikasi digunakan sebagai jembatan atau penghubung untuk mentransfer ide atau gagasan kepada pihak-pihak lain, sehingga dapat mengubah cara pandang seseorang terhadap sesuatu hal. Menurut Ashley M sistemontagu, Komunikasi merupakan bagian yang mendasar dalam relasi dan mengubah kepribadian seseorang. Dalam hal ini, komunikasi erat kaitannya dengan perilaku dan pengalaman kesadaran manusia, sehingga komunikasi menjadi bidang keilmuan menarik apabila dikaji dari sisi psikologi.
