The Effectiveness of Baitul Maal Wat Tamwil (Bmt) in Reducing Poverty

The establishment of the so-called Baitul Maal wat Tamwil (BMTs) in the form of an Islamic microfinance (IMFI) is intended initially to effectively help the poor. At present time there are around 3,874 BMTs operating around the country. Although the BMTs have been existing since more than ten years ago, yet no research has been conducted to examine their effectiveness in alleviating the poverty. This study in aimed at fulfilling this important gap. The case study approach on BMT MMU Sidogiri (located at East Java Province) is taken. The paper goes beyond data measurement using descriptive statistics, paired t-test and some poverty measurement indexes such as headcount index, poverty gap, Sen index and and Foster, Greer, and Thorbecke Index to investigate the effectiveness of the BMT in reducing poverty. The study reveals that BMT financing is effective in reducing poverty. Most of respondents can increase their income after receiving BMT financing. Products of the BMT especially BBA and mudarabah to empower the poor in various productive business have been able to reduce extent and severity of poverty.

The Yield and Bioactivity of Rotenone Extracted from Derris Elliptica

Optimization: The Effect of Processing Parameters on the Yield of Rotenone and Bioactivity Via Statistical Analysis

This research helps understand the effects of the processing parameters in the batch solid-liquid extraction process towards the yield of rotenoids resin, rotenone and their biological activities. The correlation determined between all independent variables via statistical analysis would further promote and enhance the usage of rotenoids resin as a phytochemical pesticide or botanical insecticide products. Understanding the effect of processing parameters against the yield of rotenoids resin, rotenone and their biological activities are essential in designing a better processing technology to maintain and preserve the bio-active constituents in the extracts and rotenoids resin effectively. Although genus Derris roots have been identified as a potential cash crop due to its abundance growth in Malaysia, no research work of its own native species has been conducted locally. Therefore, the opportunities to develop an option to the synthetic pesticides by developing an environmental-friendly natural bio-pesticide from local plant species is the main rationale of why this extensive research work should be completed and carried out successfully.

Structures of Nucleons and Nuclei in Low and High Density QCD

The notion of what constitutes matter in fact is not static but evolves with time, changing in step with technological advances or more precisely with the growth in the power of the sources of energy that become available to the experimenter. It is successively discovered that matter is build up from molecules; that the molecules are composed of atoms; the atoms of electron and nuclei; and the nuclei of protons and neutrons. Extensive researches, since the start of nineteenth century, have been carried out by the scientists to conclude about the ultimate representatives of the matter, i.e. the basic building blocks called the elementary particles or sub-atomic particles. The book devotes mainly to the higher order effects in structure functions and some aspects of high density quantum chromodynamics. The analysis is based on Dokshitzer, Gribov, Lipatov, Altarelli, Parisi (DGLAP) evolution equations which are the basic tools to study the underlying dynamics of quarks and gluons.

Magnetorheological Fluids

Behaviour of MR Fluids

A brief description about field responsive fluids and their properties are described. Magnetorheological (MR) fluids are liquid materials whose properties can be controlled by the execution of an external magnetic field. These rheological changes are reversible and dependent on the strength of an excitation magnetic field. In this book, customized test equipment was constructed and fabricated, while the magnetic circuit design was analyzed using finite element method. The equipment was capable of varying the magnetic field strengths. Combinations of process parameters of initial gap size, applied current and squeeze speed were used in the experiments. Results, mainly in terms of stress-strain relationships were presented and discussed. In addition, the behaviour of MR fluids was found to be dependent on the relative movement between the solid magnetic particles and the carrier fluid in squeeze mode. Eventually, the understanding of the behaviour of such fluids, together with recent progress in the development of MR fluids, has convinced researchers and engineers that MR devices are among the most promising devices for a large number of applications in various technological fields.

Nanostructured Zno Thermoelectric Materials for Microelectronics

Thermoelectric materials are more efficient at higher temperatures due to higher Carnot Efficiency. Nevertheless, its practical high temperature use is still limited due to the expensive surface protection coating required to prevent oxidation and vaporization. Zinc Oxide (ZnO), a cheap metal oxide with high melting temperature and chemical inertness, is a good candidate to solve this problem. ZnO is a semiconductive oxide but when Zn is substituted by Aluminium (Al), the electrical conductivity increases. However, when Al-doping is increased to above 2mol%, ZnAl2O4 spinel phase will be formed. This spinel phase reduces the efficiency of ZnO. In this book, we show that the solubility of Al2O3 in ZnO by can be increased by introducing NiO, which has dual valency, similar to that of Al and Zn, thus obtaining a thermoelectric material that could be used at high temperatures.

The Viabilities of Musyarakah as Social Protection Mechanism

Case Studies of Jogjakarta Earthquake 2006

The increasing occurrence of natural disaster nowadays has shifted the paradigm of disaster mitigation from government centric towards society-based mitigation. This book explores the financial aspects as crucial factors in determining better conditions in disaster situation by highlighting the viabilities of musyarakah as a social protection mechanism in time of disaster. As the oldest financial instrument in islamic economic system, musyarakah provides a financing framework which is potentially useful in disaster situations. Through field observation in Jogjakarta in the context of 2006 earthquake, it appeared that the practice of musyarakah by both social organization and financial institution has given a relief mechanism for the victims and at the same time carry out social resiliencies in responding to disaster frustration. In addition, musyarakah will remain as a mere potential without creativity and engagement of various elements in society as well as government support.

Soil Hook System As an Innovative Soil Anchor

Structures like buried pipelines, transmission towers and earth structures subjected to considerable vertical or horizontal pullout forces are usually supported by anchors. The anchors are helical or plate systems which require excavation and grout in their applications. During the last fifty years, many researchers focused on pullout capacity of anchors. The aim of this book is to obtain breakout factor and ultimate pullout capacity load of Soil Hook System (SHS) and compares it with previous finding by different researchers. SHS is a new anchor system base on the state of the art of plate anchors that does not require grout and excavation in their applications. It was found that the pullout load capacity and breakout of SHS was similar to the works done by the previous researchers in plate anchors. This book has solved the problem of the installation of anchors into sand with SHS without the need to grout or excavate.

Impact of Microfinance on Poverty

Microfinance recognizes that poor people are remarkable reservoirs of energy and knowledge. And while the lack of financial services is a sign of poverty, today it is also understood as an untapped opportunity to create markets, bring people in from the margins and give them the tools with which to help themselves. Where once the poor were commonly seen as passive victims, microfinance recognizes that poor people are remarkable reservoirs of energy and knowledge. And while the lack of financial services is a sign of poverty, today it is also understood as an untapped opportunity to create markets, bring people in from the margins and give them the tools with which to help themselves.
