Proceedings of the Eighteenth Annual Conference of the Cognitive Science Society

July 12-15, 1996, University of California, San Diego

This volume features the complete text of all regular papers, posters, and summaries of symposia presented at the 18th annual meeting of the Cognitive Science Society. Papers have been loosely grouped by topic, and an author index is provided in the back. In hopes of facilitating searches of this work, an electronic index on the Internet's World Wide Web is provided. Titles, authors, and summaries of all the papers published here have been placed in an online database which may be freely searched by anyone. You can reach the Web site at: http://www.cse.ucsd.edu/events/cogsci96/proceedings. You may view the table of contents for this volume on the LEA Web site at: http://www.erlbaum.com.

Directions for the Future

Issues in English for Academic Purposes

The papers comprising this volume are selected from presentations made at the 2001 Conference of the British Association of Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes, which was held at the University of Strathclyde (in Glasgow, Scotland). The role of EAP (English for Academic Purposes) is increasingly important, as higher education institutions consider their linguistic support strategies (both for native and non-native speakers of English), and confront the potential of the world wide web as a scholarly and pedagogic resource. The articles collected consider EAP - as an international profession - from a number of vital and relevant perspectives including practical pedagogy, research, and the impact of new technology.

With this in mind the suggestion that a single academic writing course, for
example, could be expected to provide effective help for students across a wide
range of subject areas is perhaps suspect. Ron White considers the ...
Commenting in the main on students having a Confucian cultural heritage, she
advocates the explicit teaching of metacognitive strategies which encourage
learners both to discern how academic text is structured and to make use of these
in their own writing.

A Metacognitive Approach to Social Skills Training

MASST : a Program for Grades 4 Through 12

This step-by-step plan contains 150 teacher-tested activities in social skills for all students in grades 4-12. The emphasis is on helping students to develop self-control, evaluation techniques, the ability to make better choices, & foresightedness. Their problem-solving skills, observation skills, & communication skills are addressed. Students learn how to act responsibly, set goals, change their own behavior, become more sensitive to the needs of others & more willing to change. Out-of-school practice activities, easy-to-follow lesson plans, & clear, concise directions on how to use them are included. Ready-to-copy activities & worksheets, plus a guide that tells you how to adapt for 4- to 18-week sessions are also provided.

This step-by-step plan contains 150 teacher-tested activities in social skills for all students in grades 4-12.
