Gender Equity Sources and Resources for Education Students

What makes girls avoid math, science, and technology in school? And what can teacher educators do to help new teachers keep this from happening so that all of our children's talents can find expression? These two volumes provide teaching materials and background information on gender equity for teacher educators in mathematics, science, and technology education and their students. A practical guide, Gender Equity Right from the Start is usable by professors of education for preservice teachers and by staff developers for in-service teachers. By adapting the material for other subjects, it can also be used by teacher educators in content areas other than math, science, and technology. It consists of two volumes: Instructional Activities for Teacher Educators in Mathematics, Science, and Technology contains some 200 teaching activities on the major issues in gender equity, emphasizing solutions and not just problems. Activities take place in out-of-class assignments and field experiences whenever possible to minimize demands on class time. Sources and Resources for Education Students in Mathematics, Science, and Technology contains student materials needed for the activities as well as extensive print, electronic, organizational, and other resources for further information.

An Introduction to Modern Analysis

Examining the basic principles in real analysis and their applications, this text provides a self-contained resource for graduate and advanced undergraduate courses. It contains independent chapters aimed at various fields of application, enhanced by highly advanced graphics and results explained and supplemented with practical and theoretical exercises. The presentation of the book is meant to provide natural connections to classical fields of applications such as Fourier analysis or statistics. However, the book also covers modern areas of research, including new and seminal results in the area of functional analysis.

Strategies Of Improving Turbine Efficiency In Micro-hydro Power Plants

Pelton Wheel And Cross-flow Turbine

Most Micro Hydro Power plants, particularly in developing countries, are not delivering their best possible power output due to sub-optimal design and construction of their various components. For existing MHS plants which are not working as efficiently as desired a feasible cost effective strategy would be to improve the efficiency of the hydro- turbine with the effect of improving the overall efficiency of the system. The turbine is much more adaptable to retrofit than any other part of the Micro Hydro System while keeping the overall project cost per kilowatt produced within acceptable range. This book shows that the main factors that affect efficiency of Pelton and Cross-flow turbines, which are commonly used in Southern Africa, are the fabrication processes; material used; the control of the water jet movement and flow rate. The fabrication process and the material used determine the roughness of the turbine produced. The roughness determines the friction which in turn affects the efficiency of a turbine. These processes and the use of stainless steel resulted in the least rough finish. This gave an overall increase of 20 - 25% on the turbine efficiencies
