Hispanic Students' Perceptions of the Effectiveness of Learning Communities

A Case Study of First-year University Students

This study focused on the perceptions students have about the effectiveness of learning communities, a focus of the First-Year Success initiative at Texas A & M International University. Because many of our students are Hispanic and/or first generation college students, the traditional lecture based college classrooms may not be effective. This study employed a case-study focusing on one section of a Freshman Seminar class that was part of a learning community. Data was gathered using interviews and journals. Students perceived learning communities to be helpful because it enabled them to make friends more easily and feel more connected to the University, two things that have been shown to increase retention. Students also believed that the Freshman Seminar class taught them valuable skills that enabled them to be more successful in college. However, students did not perceive that an integrated curriculum nor the peer mentoring program as particularly useful. In order to improve the First-Year Success program, these issues must be addressed.

Assessing Student Perception of Social Media for Emergency Notification by a University

A Case Study

Under federal law (the Clery Act), Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs) now have a legal responsibility to notify students in a timely manner about campus emergencies. Failure to comply may result in financial penalties from the U.S. Department of Education. Virginia Tech was fined $55,000 for failure to quickly warn their students of the shootings that occurred on its campus in 2007. Though IHEs are now being held responsible, there has been little guidance in identifying effective methods and in implementing timely notification procedures. This case study assesses student perceptions of the use of social media by universities to deliver emergency alerts. Social media have emerged as a real-time communication tool widely popular among college students. To examine the use of social media for emergency notification, a literature review and interviews with professionals in the field were conducted, and a survey instrument was developed. The survey instrument was then used to study student use and perceptions through an email survey distributed to the student population. The response rate was 9% of the student population of 20,472 who received the survey. The results revealed that a vast majority of students are in favor of using social media for emergency notifications by IHEs. There was much support for the current alert system and a Facebook emergency notification page. The results of this study provide IHE emergency management officials with empirical evidence to guide decisions about adopting methods to notify students during emergencies. The implications of this research will help IHEs notify students sooner, thus saving lives, and aid in avoiding financial penalties.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Task Motivation and Student Motivation in an English for Occupational Purposes Course at the Tertiary Level in Hong Kong: A Case Study submitted by William Lau for the degree of Master of Arts at the University of Hong Kong September, 2003 This dissertation is an account of a qualitative research study conducted on a class of final year higher diploma students at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University during the second semester of 2003. The report details the experiences of students as they undergo tasks in an EOP course called 'English in the Workplace'. Drawing on teacher diary-entries, video-recordings and interviews with students, this report is a description of the researcher's observations of student motivation as they carry out learning tasks, the students' appraisals of those tasks and the analysis of all the data that are collected. This study looks at student motivation from the classroom context and attempts to describe the factors that affect student motivation at the tertiary level. It is an exploratory study that attempts to capture and analyse the motivated behaviours of students as they engage in various tasks, providing a picture of the complex nature of the motivation and its relationship with the learning process. Re-engaging Students in Their Learning Through Middle School Reform

A Case Study Evaluation of a Vertically Structured Curriculum

The phrase "middle schooling" refers to the school setting for adolescent students generally between the ages of 11 and 15 years of age (Lawton, 1999). This period of time has been recognized on a national level as being particularly significant in education. A call for reform in upper primary and lower secondary to address the understanding of adolescents in a complex and changing society has been recognized publicly at a federal and state level (Lawton, 1999). This research evaluates the redesign of one middle school's structure through the implementation of a vertical curriculum in a catholic secondary college in a country town. The program has been in place for three years in the college and the need to evaluate it takes on significance for the college itself, and the wider educational community who have been discussing and researching middle school curriculum design for a number of years. Research methodology takes the form of attitudinal questionnaires administered to parents, students and staff in the college. Quantitative analysis using descriptive statistics is used for closed questions to look for significant differences between the parent, student and teacher attitude towards the philosophy and delivery of the vertical structure. One-way ANOVA and MANOVA analysis revealed that parents, students and staff were all supportive of the new structure and its driving philosophies, although parents scored significantly higher on the scales examined than staff or students. Correlations and Chi Square analysis were applied to selected scales, revealing overall that the outcomes of the vertical curriculum are being met. A number of areas were also identified as needing improvement, with areas of emphasis differing for the parent, staff and student groups in the community.

Grammaticalization of the Complex Sentence

A case study in Chadic

The general objective of the study is systematic examination of the processes involved in the formation and evolution of complex sentence constructions in a group of genetically related languages. The Chadic language group, at about 140 languages, constitutes the largest and most diversified branch of the Afroasiatic family. One of the findings of the present work is that languages starting from the same base may develop quite different morphological and syntactic structures. With respect to issues of general linguistic interest, the book deals with motivations for grammaticalization: It is proposed that one of the most important motivations is satisfaction of the principle of well formedness, that is, that every element in an utterance must have its role transparent to the hearer either by inherent lexical properties or by grammatical means. In the present work both aspects of grammaticalization, viz. the emergence of grammatical constructions and the emergence of grammatical morphemes, are given equal weight. In addition to semantic metaphor and metonymy as mechanisms in the processes of grammaticalization, the present work develops the notion of semiotic metonymy, whereby a part of a sign performs the function of the sign. It is shown that semiotic metonymy plays an important role in the grammaticalization of grammatical morphemes and constructions into other morphemes and constructions. The book also shows that unindirectionality is not a governing principle with respect to the development of grammatical morphemes into other grammatical morphemes; rather, there is considerable evidence and theoretical justification for the bidirectionality principle.

Predictive Data Mining of Chronic Diseases Using Decision Tree

A Case Study of Health Insurance Company in Indonesia

The development of information and communication technology has rapidly penetrated to several sectors including health sector. A good data management has become necessity for a healthcare company since it will provide better control of the costs and mitigate risks. However, to develop a good quality data management is complex. Therefore, data mining as one of the advancements of science and technology development offers its technique (such as decision tree) to mine the hidden information from the large amounts of medical data that may improve the decision making. It is the aim of this study to identify the potential benefits that data mining can bring to the health sector, using Indonesian Health Insurance company data as case study. The most commonly data mining technique, decision tree, was used to generate the prediction model by visualizing the tree to perform predictive analysis of chronic diseases. All the steps in data mining process such as data collection, data preprocessing and data mining have been performed by a data mining tool, named WEKA. Additionally, WEKA also was utilized to evaluate the prediction performance by measuring the accuracy, the specificity and the sensitivity. Among the result found in this study shows some factors that the health insurance can take into account when predicting the treatment cost of a patient.
