In the first chapter, we propose a fast method for fitting planar Bspline curves to unorganized data points. In traditional methods, optimization of control points and foot points are performed in two alternating timeconsuming steps in every iteration: 1) control points are updated by setting up and solving a linear system of equations; and 2) foot points are computed by projecting each data point onto a B-spline curve. Our method uses the LBFGS optimization method to optimize control points and foot points simultaneously and therefore it does not need to solve a linear system of equations or performing foot point projection in every iteration. As a result, the proposed method is much faster than existing methods. In the second chapter, we propose a new shape description method using a radial basis function built on the medial axis of the shape. By formulating our approach as a constrained L DEGREES1-minimization problem, our method produces sparse reconstruction result which uses much fewer basis functions than previous approaches. Besides the sparse representation capacity, our method also has advantages in two aspects: 1) Our method does not rely on normal information of input points. 2) Our method has stronger capacity in representing multi-scale shapes compared with existing methods. All these characteristics will be illustrated in the corresponding chapters and sections. Subjects: Computer graphics Geometry - Data processing

Abstract: Liberal Studies has become a core subject of senior form students in the new education system in Hong Kong since 2009. One purpose of the subject is to develop students as life-long learners. To enhance teaching effectiveness and achieve this goal, learning environment is an important element. This study investigated the effects of co-operative learning on Form Four (Grade 10) and Form Five (Grade 11) students' metacognition and self-motivation towards Liberal Studies. Participants were 245 students from Form Four and Form Five in a local band two secondary school located in Tin Shui Wai. 68 of them were taught by the author with co-operative learning and 177 of them were taught by other teachers with other teaching methods. Data collection was conducted using questionnaires and group interviews to assess students' motivation and abilities of self-directed learning in Liberal Studies among different teaching groups. Results of the study showed that co-operative learning is more likely to enhance students' motivation and self-regulatory skills in their learning than other teaching methods. However, with limitations, results of this study were not precise enough. It is suggested that further research should be conducted to find a more concrete effects of co-operative learning on students' metacognition and self-motivation towards Liberal Studies. The focus of this study was the planning, implementation and evaluation of cooperative learning in the subject of Business Fundamentals. This case study included observations, interviews and questionnaires with eighty-two secondary two students who took the subject of Business Fundamentals. This study focuses on students' learning behaviors after the implementation of cooperative learning. The results of this study indicated that most students enjoyed cooperative learning. This study also indicated that both teachers and students have to adapt their teaching and learning approaches when cooperative learning is implemented. A well planned schedule for the implementation of cooperative learning throughout the Business Fundamental curriculum also becomes the key to successful teaching and learning using this approach. 1 DOI: 10.5353/th_b3028047 Subjects: Commerce - Study and teaching (Secondary) - China - Hong Kong - Case studies Group work in education - China - Hong Kong - Case studies

More specifically, it looks at the relationship between students' scientific literacy and use of the mother-tongue (Chinese) or second language (English) when receiving instruction or writing examinations. The policy of the Hong Kong Education and Manpower Bureau (HKEMB) is based on their requirement to have Chinese as the main medium of instruction in schools while still recognising the important part that English plays in Hong Kong society. In science education world-wide, there is a general opinion that all science teaching should aim to develop scientifically literate students. Therefore, the purpose of this study was threefold. 1) An investigation into the relationship between the use of language and scientific literacy achieved by students. 2) An investigation into the influence that the specific language of science, particularly biology, has on the ability of students to learn and understand the subject. Commonly, all terms and concepts in science subjects, particularly biology, are expressed in English. 3) An investigation into i i influences that act as a barrier to students' learning (viz. learning difficulties, use of language, extrinsic pressures [e.g. society, parents and peers] placed on the students and the students' own conceptual view of biology as a subject). The hypothesis is that students, even though they study biology in English, they will mentally revert to their mother-tongue to translate and understand the concepts of this subject, and therefore, that achieved scientific literacy will be higher when using the mother-tongue rather than the second language. Further understanding into barriers of learning is gained by investigating the influences that affect students when learning, studying and responding to the need to present concepts in biology. The data was gained from two major sources. Firstly, the hypothesis was tested by means of two instruments written in both English and Chinese. Secondly, the students' biology teacher, and the students learning in each language were the subjects of a semi-structured interview. ii i The small sample size led to uncertain results statistically, however, the raw score data did show that students were more scientifically literate when answering questions in their mother-tongue and, therefore, that scientific literacy is likely to be higher when using the mother-tongue rather than the second language. The rich interview data was used to pin-point general difficulties that the students perceived in the areas mentioned above. The data gained po

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled A Study of Student Perception of Authentic Materials and its Relationship with Language Proficiency submitted by Carolyn Ki Yan Ngai for the degree of Master of Arts (Applied Linguistics) at the University of Hong Kong September, 2003 In view of the recent trend of using authentic materials in language teaching in Hong Kong, this study aims to explore student perception of authentic materials and its relationship with language proficiency in a Hong Kong secondary school, in which the author is working. It examines the perceptions of 32 students towards authentic input in journal writing and interviews. These students are of similar age and educational levels with the same Chinese language backgrounds. To collect data, protocol analysis was used. The protocol analysis revealed some affective and pragmatic beliefs towards authentic materials. This study also examines the relationship between student perception and their language proficiency. The study found that the interesting content and the daily language inherent in authentic input engaged students' interest and they were therefore more actively involved in the learning process. Different responses were identified among learners and it was found that different views towards language learning had an impact on authenticity. Findings from the study could enhance our understanding of authenticity and implications from the study could provide insights into the selection and development of teaching methodologies. Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Task Motivation and Student Motivation in an English for Occupational Purposes Course at the Tertiary Level in Hong Kong: A Case Study submitted by William Lau for the degree of Master of Arts at the University of Hong Kong September, 2003 This dissertation is an account of a qualitative research study conducted on a class of final year higher diploma students at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University during the second semester of 2003. The report details the experiences of students as they undergo tasks in an EOP course called 'English in the Workplace'. Drawing on teacher diary-entries, video-recordings and interviews with students, this report is a description of the researcher's observations of student motivation as they carry out learning tasks, the students' appraisals of those tasks and the analysis of all the data that are collected. This study looks at student motivation from the classroom context and attempts to describe the factors that affect student motivation at the tertiary level. It is an exploratory study that attempts to capture and analyse the motivated behaviours of students as they engage in various tasks, providing a picture of the complex nature of the motivation and its relationship with the learning process.
