Damp Yankees

(Another American Gobsmacked by England)

What is it really like to be an American living in England? In his collection of witty observations about the differences between England and America and their inhabitants, an American professor exiled to the mysterious North of England reveals the quirky characteristics and wonderful customs that define the English and their beloved country. Robert Slavin goes below the polite Victorian faade as he explores the seamy underside of English culture that includes dancing sheep, pantos, road systems built by hard-drinking Vikings, and the power of ancient, foolish traditions. Slavin centers most of his observations in York-shire as he explores the very best things about England, questions why there are not many English children, and contemplates the positives of dreary weather, the Sunday carvery at local pubs, and why it is okay for a milkman to be knighted by the queen. Damp Yankees shares an informative and provocative insiders glimpse into the heart of England, allowing for a fresh perspective for Americans who want a better understanding of the lovely island of Britain and its people, exotic customs, and ancient traditions.

Strategic Management Simplified

What Every Manager Needs to Know About Strategy and How to Manage it

"I have “gone to school” on his research and have found his model to be a malleable process that is readily shaped to incorporate new concepts and ideas. This durability is testament to the value of Sid’s work." —Don Bowers, Former CEO, Makino, Inc. Strategic Management Simplified is a handbook that is designed to help the reader achieve a critical balance so rare in business – keeping your actions tied to your strategy, making decisions with a reasonable amount of assessment, and doing both in a real time way which allows you to adjust to changing business conditions. The author uses the term strategic management versus strategic planning because the term “plan” implies a static (or point in time) exercise, while the term “management” suggests interaction and responsiveness to dynamic context. All kinds of plans can be developed to lead action, but they should be based on a strategy for the organization. The challenge is to actually manage the organization’s strategy over time and to think strategically as you are doing it. This book provides an overview of the management policies and culture necessary for sound strategic planning to flourish in any organization and goes on to offer practical steps on how to create and implement: A strategic statement which can guide your organization’s resource allocation decisions. A strategic management system which allows you and your staff to change your strategic statement over time as you challenge the assumptions upon which it is based.

Strategic Management

Core Concepts from the Internet

Many textbooks have been published in the academic field of study known as Strategic Management. Some are written to meet the guidelines set forth by specialized accrediting agencies; others, to impart the results of research or scholarly activities. Whatever the reason for publication, all textbooks in this field of study cover its core concepts. A core concept in a given academic discipline is one that is central to the field. All scholars may not agree that it is “correct,” yet it heavily influences their thinking (through acceptance, modification, or rejection) and is likely to stand the test of time. The application of these concepts to the professional situations of the student is in a constant state of change. How do business schools attempt to accommodate this constant state of change? Current instructional practice in most business schools is to present the core concept via an established textbook and require students to demonstrate competency in the concept by conducting a case analysis or some other experiential activity. The case study assignment requires the student to assess the situation as presented in the case, consider this assessment in light of the core concept(s) studied, and develop solutions for the case that are based on the core concept(s). In the end, students learn to apply traditional textbook-based concepts to traditional problems. Yet, as has been reported in the media, “the Internet has changed everything.” Has the Internet changed the relevancy of Strategic Management core concepts? The assumption of this book is that the relevancy of the time-tested core concepts has not changed. What the Internet has changed is access to these core concepts. It is now possible for anyone to learn the core concepts of Strategic Management, or any other field of study, via the Internet. This real-time access to information can be used to revolutionize the application of core concepts to the professional lives of those who learn them.
