History and Context in Comparative Public Policy

Douglas E. Ashford joins a growing number of scholars who have questioned the behavioralist assumptions of much policy science. The essays in this volume show why policy analysis cannot be confined to prevailing methods of social science. Policy-making behavior involves historical, contextual, and philosophical factors that also raise critical questions about the concepts and theory of the discipline. Ashford asks difficult questions about the contextual, conjunctural, and unintentional circumstances that affect actual decision-making. His bridging essays summarize opposing viewpoints and conflicting interpretations to help form a new agenda for comparative policy analysis.

Islam in Context

Past, Present, and Future

In recent months, much attention has been paid to Islam and the greater Muslim world. Some analysis has been openly hostile, while even more has been overly simplistic. Islam in Context goes behind the recent crisis to discuss the history of Islam, describe its basic structure and beliefs, explore the current division between Muslim moderates and extremists, and suggest a way forward. Authors Peter G. Riddell and Peter Cotterell draw from sources such as the Qur'an, early Christian chronicles of the Crusades, and contemporary Muslim and non-Muslim writings. They move beyond the stereotypes of Muhammad-both idealized and negative-and argue against the myth that relatively recent events in the Middle East are the only cause for the clash between Islam and the West. Riddell and Cotterell ask the non-Muslim world to attempt to understand Islam from the perspective of Muslims and to acknowledge past mistakes. At the same time, they challenge the Muslim world by suggesting that Islam stands today at a vital crossroads and only Muslims can forge the way forward. Islam in Context will appeal to all those who are interested in an alternative to the easily packaged descriptions of the relationship between Islam and the West.

Muhammad died on a Monday and was buried the next day. Abu Bakr—father of
Aisha (Muhammad's favorite wife), the companion of Muhammad during the
withdrawal to Madina, and leader of the Friday mosque prayers during
Muhammad's illness—did not actually become Muhammad's successor. Instead,
he became the leader of the Muslims and so also of the Arab people, their caliph,
the first of four caliphs who would come to be called the Four Rightly Guided
Caliphs. But the ...

Using Texture Correlation to Measure Strain in Trabecular Bone

It was a real struggle to stay motivated and interested. I really wasn't sure I'd finish
the program or if I even cared. Looking back to how ... Davis environment, with its
friendly staff and students and positive atmosphere, contributed significantly to
this effort. Additionally, great instructors, Dean Shackelford, Professor Suran,
Professor Upadhyaya, and Dr. Martin, kept me interested in the work and
motivated. And somehow, my involvement as a national officer in the YWCA also

The Theory and Criticism of Virtual Texts

An Annotated Bibliography, 1988-1999

Virtual texts have emerged within the realm of the Internet as the predominant mode of global communication. But despite the pervasiveness of the Internet in nearly all aspects of contemporary life, no single resource has cataloged the ways in which numerous disciplines have investigated and critiqued virtual texts. This bibliography provides more than 1500 annotated entries for books, articles, dissertations, and electronic resources on virtual texts published between 1988 and 1999. It explores such topics as the history and development of virtual communication, visualization studies, discourse studies, information design, computer-mediated communication and education, and privacy and intellectual property issues. Entries are arranged alphabetically within topical chapters, and extensive indexes facilitate easy access.
