QualiBuddy: an Online Tool to Improve Research Skills in Qualitative Data Analysis

Abstract : Purpose: Novice researchers experience difficulties in analysing qualitative data. To develop the skills necessary for qualitative data analysis, theoretical manuals are often insufficient. Supervisors supporting students in analysing qualitative data stress the need for practical guidance, including exercises and feedback. The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss QualiBuddy, an interactive online support tool in answer to this need. Design/methodology/approach: An online support tool was developed in answer to existing problems regarding analysing qualitative data. The tool provides a learning trajectory of 11 stages of analysis, which all contain examples, exercises, feedback, verification questions and questions for reflection. This tool is developed from a multidisciplinary perspective and is constructed around various steps. During the development process, internal feedback from the members of the project team, as well as external feedback from an international steering group with experts in qualitative research were taken into account. Findings: The tool QualiBuddy is based on an empirically and theoretically grounded approach to qualitative data analyses. Pilot tests with experienced qualitative researchers suggest that the tool potentially allows novice researchers from various domains to develop and improve their skills in conceptualising interview data, specifically within a grounded theory approach. Originality/value: QualiBuddy is a newly developed interactive online education tool based on and complementary to existing guides for qualitative data analysis.

Computer Programs for Qualitative Data Analysis

A Software Sourcebook

Written by qualitative researchers for qualitative researchers, and not presuming extensive computer experience, this user-friendly guide takes a critical look at the wide range of software currently available. The book gives detailed reviews of 24 programs in five major categories: text retrievers, textbase managers, code-and-retrieve programs, code-based theory-builders and conceptual network-builders. In addition, the book provides ratings of over 75 features per program. The authors also offer detailed guidance on the operation of each program, helping the reader to ask key questions about the use of the computer - the nature of the project being undertaken, what time-line analyses are planned and what worksheets are re

“Which computer program should I use to analyze my qualitative data?” This
book was written to help answer that question. To begin with, we should
comment on the question itself. First and foremost, there is no computer program
that will “analyze” your data. We could borrow a bromide here: “Computers don't
analyze data, people do.” Like its parent statement about guns, this is a half-truth.
Guns do make it very easy for people to kill people. And computers make it much

Preface to the second edition Since the publication of the first edition of this book,
the world of qualitative data analysis has changed yet again. The tools in NVivo
have adapted to the increasing popularity of mixed methods research, research
involving use of multimedia, and the greater involvement of teams in qualitative
projects. They have adapted, as well, to a world-wide increase in the digitization
of data and new modes of digital communication, for example, through social

The SAGE Handbook of Qualitative Data Analysis

The wide range of approaches to data analysis in qualitative research can seem daunting even for experienced researchers. This handbook is the first to provide a state-of-the art overview of the whole field of QDA; from general analytic strategies used in qualitative research, to approaches specific to particular types of qualitative data, including talk, text, sounds, images and virtual data. The handbook includes chapters on traditional analytic strategies such as grounded theory, content analysis, hermeneutics, phenomenology and narrative analysis, as well as coverage of newer trends like mixed methods, reanalysis and meta-analysis. Practical aspects such as sampling, transcription, working collaboratively, writing and implementation are given close attention, as are theory and theorization, reflexivity, and ethics. Written by a team of experts in qualitative research from around the world, this handbook is an essential compendium for all qualitative researchers and students across the social sciences.

Data analysis is the central step in qualitative research. Whatever the data are, it
is their analysis that, in a decisive way, forms the outcomes of the research.
Sometimes, data collection is limited to recording and docu- menting naturally
occurring phenomena, for example by recording interactions. Then qualitative
research is concentrated on analysing such recordings. Given the centrality of the
analysis in qualitative research, in general, a kind of stocktaking of the various
approaches ...

Wordcraft: Applied Qualitative Data Analysis (QDA):

Tools for Public and Voluntary Social Services

Wordcraft: Applied Qualitative Data Analysis: Tools for Public and Voluntary Social Services is a practical text that helps students and social service personnel better evaluate agency programmes through the use of various qualitative documents which most agencies currently have readily available. In order to fully evaluate an agency programme, qualitative and quantitative methods should be considered. Agencies have a wealth of data in narrative and textual format which also must be evaluated in order to gain a complete picture of the agency's performance. These documents include case intake forms, exit summaries, social histories, case progress notes, and more. This book aims to provide a straight forward guide to performing meaningful qualitative analysis, in a step-by-step approach. The second half of the book contains actual case illustrations of the various methods with actual published articles from SAGE journals. Each case will contain margin notes, introductory remarks, and a complete discussion following the case.
