Reproductive Performance of Dairy Cows in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has one of the highest densities of livestock in the world with 145 large ruminants per square kilometer. Dairy is the most important sector of livestock industry in Bangladesh that provides greater part of animal source protein for human consumption. Lifetime productivity of cows largely depends on their individual reproductive performance. In most countries, the primary objective of a reproductive control program in a dairy herd is to have each cow calve and produce a live calf in every 12 months. Like in many other countries, poor reproductive efficiency has been considered to be the major limiting factors in medium and large scale market oriented dairying in Bangladesh for achieving this goal. This book highlighted the overall reproductive efficiency in main milk pocket area of Bangladesh combining both traditional and recent measures of reproductive indexes.

Three Case-studies of the Use of an Audio Support System Embedded in a Computer-based Cognitive Tutoring System and Its Effects on the Math Word Problem Solving Performance of Struggling Readers

The purpose of this multiple-case study was to investigate the importance of the use of a support system in which the math text is read to the students through the use of a text to speech engine (audio support system) embedded in a cognitive tutoring system. In addition this study investigated whether the use of an audio support system had any effect on the word problem solving performance of three struggling readers when they were presented with a seven-step process to solve word problems. Pre-assessments were carried out to determine whether the participants had reading difficulties in the areas of decoding, fluency and/or comprehension that may affect their math word problem solving performance. The results indicated that the embedded devices did facilitate the word problem solving skills of these struggling readers. The reading barriers were reduced or removed and the program allowed for individualization. The results also indicated that the participants utilized these embedded devices differently; however, there was not a significant difference comparatively in how these devices were used. Whether the students were successful in learning from this cognitive tutoring system is inconclusive. This program is written in such a way that the students are expected to solve the word problems correctly because the embedded devices made it almost impossible for the students to fail. Although the cognitive tutoring system appears to be an effective approach for providing ongoing practice and individualization, it appears that students would benefit from direct instruction from the classroom teacher who can help the students review their work, identify their own mistakes, make the necessary corrections, and bring about a more thorough understanding of the problem solving process.

An Analysis of Metacognitive Reading Strategies and the Academic Performance of Middle School Students

The results of the study revealed that the MARSI: Metacognitive Awareness of Reading Strategies Inventory and selected student demographics had a significant relationship in only Reading Objectives 1, 3, and 4 of the TAKS Reading assessment. In contrast, the MARSI, and selected student demographics did not have a significant relationship to Reading Objective 2 on the TAKS Reading assessment.

Correlation Between Reading Skills and Mathematics Performance: An Analysis of Stanford Achievement Test Scores from Grades 6 to 11

The purpose of this research is to document the correlations between reading skills and the mathematics performance, in particular on word problem solving. This research was carried out at a private school in El Paso, Texas. The sample population consists of fifty-eight students currently enrolled from six through eleventh grades. This study considers the Stanford Achievement Test scores imparted in March 2006. The Stanford Achievement Test is a multiple-choice assessment that facilitates educators to find out what students know and are able to do at the end of a school year. Six out of the fifty-eight students' problem solving sessions were recorded when solving four word problems chosen from the textbook. Results show that reading skills are correlated to mathematics but these correlations are not strong as one may think. Also, results from the student problem-solving sessions reveal that students may read and understand word problems having a high reading score yet they may have problems decoding and setting them up. This indicates that there may be another set of skills for student success in mathematics problem solving than the reading skills.

The Situated Cognition of Reading Comprehension: An Examination of Middle School Student's Performance on Rhythmical African American Prose in a Comparative Analysis Framework, the RAP Test

The findings from the present study outline the need to develop culturally appropriate assessments and learning environments for culturally and linguistically diverse student populations, specifically African-American students, in the area of reading comprehension and literacy education.

An Analysis of Oral Performance by Japanese Learners of English

The second goal, the analysis of task influence, involves an investigation of the interaction between proficiency level and task complexity, i.e., how learners of different proficiencies respond differentially to pedagogic tasks depending on the cognitive demands of the tasks. For this purpose, oral performances elicited by a (dynamic) narrative and a (static) picture description task are compared.
