QualiBuddy: an Online Tool to Improve Research Skills in Qualitative Data Analysis

Abstract : Purpose: Novice researchers experience difficulties in analysing qualitative data. To develop the skills necessary for qualitative data analysis, theoretical manuals are often insufficient. Supervisors supporting students in analysing qualitative data stress the need for practical guidance, including exercises and feedback. The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss QualiBuddy, an interactive online support tool in answer to this need. Design/methodology/approach: An online support tool was developed in answer to existing problems regarding analysing qualitative data. The tool provides a learning trajectory of 11 stages of analysis, which all contain examples, exercises, feedback, verification questions and questions for reflection. This tool is developed from a multidisciplinary perspective and is constructed around various steps. During the development process, internal feedback from the members of the project team, as well as external feedback from an international steering group with experts in qualitative research were taken into account. Findings: The tool QualiBuddy is based on an empirically and theoretically grounded approach to qualitative data analyses. Pilot tests with experienced qualitative researchers suggest that the tool potentially allows novice researchers from various domains to develop and improve their skills in conceptualising interview data, specifically within a grounded theory approach. Originality/value: QualiBuddy is a newly developed interactive online education tool based on and complementary to existing guides for qualitative data analysis.

Analysis of Qualitative Data

Readers familiar with factor analysis may find parallels between factor analysis
models for continuous data and latent-class models for discrete data. The
treatment of latent-class analysis in this chapter is most closely related to work of
Goodman (1974a,b) and Haberman (1974c, 1976b, 1977). This work builds on a
substantial earlier literature. The most extensive treatment of latent-class analysis
is in Lazarsfeld and Henry (1968). Important earlier papers include Lazarsfeld (
1950a,b), ...

Computer Programs for Qualitative Data Analysis

A Software Sourcebook

Written by qualitative researchers for qualitative researchers, and not presuming extensive computer experience, this user-friendly guide takes a critical look at the wide range of software currently available. The book gives detailed reviews of 24 programs in five major categories: text retrievers, textbase managers, code-and-retrieve programs, code-based theory-builders and conceptual network-builders. In addition, the book provides ratings of over 75 features per program. The authors also offer detailed guidance on the operation of each program, helping the reader to ask key questions about the use of the computer - the nature of the project being undertaken, what time-line analyses are planned and what worksheets are re

“Which computer program should I use to analyze my qualitative data?” This
book was written to help answer that question. To begin with, we should
comment on the question itself. First and foremost, there is no computer program
that will “analyze” your data. We could borrow a bromide here: “Computers don't
analyze data, people do.” Like its parent statement about guns, this is a half-truth.
Guns do make it very easy for people to kill people. And computers make it much

Qualitative Data Analysis

Practical Strategies

Lecturers/instructors only - request a free digital inspection copy here Written by an experienced researcher in the field of qualitative methods, this dynamic new book provides a definitive introduction to analysing qualitative data. It is a clear, accessible and practical guide to each stage of the process, including: - Designing and managing qualitative data for analysis - Working with data through interpretive, comparative, pattern and relational analyses - Developing explanatory theory and coherent conclusions, based on qualitative data. The book pairs theoretical discussion with practical advice using a host of examples from diverse projects across the social sciences. It describes data analysis strategies in actionable steps and helpfully links to the use of computer software where relevant. This is an exciting new addition to the literature on qualitative data analysis and a must-read for anyone who has collected, or is preparing to collect, their own data. WORKING WITH DATA: A PATHWAY INTO ANALYSIS In 1620, Francis Bacon
wrote: The more ancient of the Greeks (whose writings are lost) took up with
betterjudgement a position between these two extremes — between the
presumption of pronouncing on everything, and the despair of comprehending
anything; and though frequently and bitterly complaining of the difficulty of
enquiry and the obscurity of things, and like impatient horses champing at the bit,
they did not the less ...
