Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Explained

Panacea or revolution? 'Evidence-based medicine' and 'cost-effectiveness' have become buzz-phrases for a wide variety of initiatives and planning processes which aim to give patients treatments that will benefit them. On the surface this seems a reasonable idea, but there are underlying currents which cast doubt on the process and reveal methodological problems, which must be understood if the concepts are to be properly used. Assuming no prior knowledge of the field, and written in the clear, straightforward manner the author uses in the highly successful Health Economics for the Uninitiated, this book is a short practical guide on how to use these concepts, and how to avoid their pitfalls. It will appeal to doctors, nurses, health service managers, patient organizations, academics and students of health care. It will provide essential support to those working in health care companies, and in the pharmaceutical and medical equipment industry.

English for Specific Purposes, Teaching English for Tourism

A Needs Analysis Based Approach

Tourism is, today, an enormous business industry, which employs millions of people throughout the world engaging the economic, social and cultural attention of users and providers in its services and its products. Globalisation has made English the lingua franca of Tourism. For this reason, the specific needs of the community, the profession and the students of tourism were analysed, with the aim of developing the knowledge and competencies needed to contribute to the improvement of the tourism sector in Portugal. This study analyzes the professional domains, the specific genres, the situational contexts and the communication tools used in tourism, in Portugal. It presents the results of the needs analysis carried out on the target community of the Tourism Course of the Escola Superior de Tecnologia de Viseu. Based on the results of this study, it was designed a course for teaching English for Specific Purposes for tourism.

Clinical Biostatistics Made Ridiculously Simple

The most important points in clinical biostatistics, presented intuitively with clinical examples. Valuable not only for biostatistics courses and medical Board review, but for providing a lasting clear approach to interpreting medical research reports.

"I'm Not a Big Word Fan": An Exploratory Study of Ninth-graders' Language Use in the Context of Word Consciousness-oriented Vocabulary Instruction

In this instrumental case study (Stake, 2005), I explored students' construction of literate identities against the backdrop of word consciousness-oriented (Scott, Skobel, & Wells, 2008; Scott & Nagy, 2004; Stahl & Nagy, 2006) vocabulary instruction in their ninth-grade English class. In particular, I examined how the two focal participants' identity construction influenced their positioning of themselves as vocabulary experts within and outside their ninth-grade English class. Data collection included 29 interviews with 10 student participants; 8 interviews with the classroom teacher; and 36 hours of classroom observations over four months. Analyses of the data suggested that the focal participants took important strides toward ownership (Stahl & Nagy, 2006) of the vocabulary they encountered during the study and during their reading outside of school, but that their willingness to position themselves as vocabulary experts appeared to be influenced by the local, institutional, and societal contexts (Fairclough, 1995) of their lives. Specifically, Matt demonstrated expertise in the local and institutional contexts, but accepted the position of "the dumb one" assigned to him by the people in his societal context. Beth declined to demonstrate her vocabulary expertise in the institutional context, but reveled in her power in the societal context. These data suggest that, as researchers investigate how to bring what we know about effective vocabulary instruction in the earlier grades to secondary settings, we must include consideration of the complexity of adolescent identity. We must attend to the complex interplay between literate practice and identity construction, especially for young people living in the "inbetween space" (Moje, 2002) of adolescence. If students in our classrooms are going to take up the agentive positions offered by a word consciousness-approach (Scott, Skobel, & Wells, 2008), teacher educators must ensure that pre- and in-service teachers are also word conscious.

School Cultures and Their Correlations with Student Achievement: An Analysis of Schools that Have Improved

Statistical analysis of the data included descriptive statistics regarding the mean, correlation between the six factors and math and language scale scores, multiple regression of data with all six factors and the ISTEP scale scores. Significant correlations were found between factor 1 (Collaborative Leadership), factor 6 (Teacher/Parent Communications) and student achievement. Multiple regression analysis revealed that factor 6 was significant and contributed the greatest variance in factor scores.

Integrating 3D Modeling, Photogrammetry and Design

This book looks at the convergent nature of technology and its relationship to the field of photogrammetry and 3D design. This is a facet of a broader discussion of the nature of technology itself and the relationship of technology to art, as well as an examination of the educational process. In the field of technology-influenced design-based education it is natural to push for advanced technology, yet within a larger institution the constraints of budget and adherence to tradition must be accepted. These opposing forces create a natural balance; in some cases constraints lead to greater creativity than freedom ever can – but in other cases the opposite is true. This work offers insights into ways to integrate new technologies into the field of design, and from a broader standpoint it also looks ahead, raising further questions and looking to the near future as to what additional technologies might cause further disruptions to 3D design as well as wonderful creative opportunities.
