Something Went Wrong? / Right! Real Studies of Leadership in Cross-Cultural Ministry

Something Went Wrong? / Right! Real Studies of Leadership in Cross-Cultural Ministry consists of 37 brief stories that originate from the cross-cultural development and leadership work of linguistic experts Alan Robert Pence and his wife, Patricia. After each story, discussion sections feature leadership issues and relevant scriptures. This is a comprehensive training resource for those going into leadership in cross-cultural ministry and in other nonprofit organizations. Alan Robert Pence and his wife began training and service with Wycliffe Bible Translators and SIL International in 1956. Following their arrival in Papua, New Guinea in 1959, they worked with the Kunimaipa (Gajili) Language Group as linguists and translators. In their five-year assignment, Alan learned to speak Kunimaipa, analyzed the grammar, compiled a dictionary, researched and got approval for an alphabet, and translated an abridged form of the book of Genesis. If you believe that experience is the best teacher, Al Pence's collection of real situations over many years is a 'must read' for anyone involved in or interested in international mission work. His ability to link real world situations to biblical references for guidance is outstanding. - Gerald Van Eeckhout, Retired Executive and Professor, University of Shanghai

Tools, Not Rules Teaching Grammar in the Writing Classroom

If you want to start an argument in a teachers' lounge, bring up the topic of how best to teach grammar. There is a wide spectrum of opinion. Traditionalists claim that we must explicitly teach grammar. Students drill the basics and diagram sentences. Sometimes their study and drills take the place of writing, but these teachers claim that good writing demands good grammar. At the opposite end of the spectrum are teachers who claim that the best way to learn grammar is to write, thereby being forced to use grammar in writing and editing. They reason that students will learn grammar in the context of actually using it, without all the drills and worksheets. They trust the writing process to instill an appreciation for grammar, instead of actually teaching it. Teachers on the write-to-learn-grammar side claim that students who are only taught grammar rules might pass tests, but since they didn't learn in the context of writing, they typically don't apply the rules when they write. Grammar traditionalists say students in writing classes never learn grammar at all, because it is not explicitly taught. In Tools, Not Rules, authors Tommy Thomason and Geoff Ward take the middle-ground position that grammar should be taught as part of the writing process. Tommy Thomason is a veteran journalist and university journalism professor at TCU. Geoff Ward is a well-known Australian professor and associate dean from James Cook University in Townsville. Both have written several books and work extensively with American teachers. Publisher's website: http: //www.eloquentbooks.com/ ToolsNotRules-TeachingGrammarInTheWritingClassroom.htm

The Lost Secret of Speaking Perfect English

The Moving Mouth Dictionary

Do you want to learn The Lost Secret of Speaking Perfect English? The Moving Mouth Dictionary technique provides a very simple approach to perfecting English speaking and pronunciation. The book takes a down-to-earth approach for speaking clear English, as it breathes some fresh air into the stuffy corridors of academic learning. It is geared to help students and business people speak impressive and naturally clear English, taking much of the guessing out of pronunciation and spelling. English will become more of a physical activity, rather than a cerebral academic subject. The key is in identifying and improving specific types of reverse and forward mouth movements, actions based on using simple vertical mouth movement notations that have simple associations with key phonetics sounds for specific letters. The technique's forward and reverse mouth movements combined with a natural English rhythm also helps trigger and access vocabulary and verbs, while aiding in word retention, fluency and auto correcting. The book features a dictionary of over 11,000 words, including some of the most difficult words in the English language, which have been broken down, putting these notations into "mouthables." The process draws heavily on early humans' natural ability to howl and growl, using their mouths vertically. Hence, the lost connection between our near ancestors can aid our ability to speak clear English, an ability we have lost and need to rediscover.
