The Role of Self-Esteem in Foreign Language Learning and Teaching

This book demonstrates how foreign language self-esteem (FLSE) affects foreign language (L2) learning and teaching, and how it fluctuates with growing proficiency. Further, it explains the interaction between FLSE and a range of factors of recognized importance in second language acquisition (SLA). The theoretical part of the book presents the main pillars of self-esteem as well as its notable influence on psychological functioning and learning, with special emphasis being placed on L2 learning. In turn, the empirical part presents the findings of a study that explored the trajectory and behavioural outcomes of FLSE across three stages of education. The book closes by outlining future research directions, as well as some pedagogical implications. In particular, the findings of the study can be employed in teaching English as a foreign or second language by helping instructors understand the significance of learners’ individual differences.

As a matter of fact, the object of the study was self-efficacy, (which is a construct
closely related to self-esteem) researched in the perspective of learners'
academic attainment. More specifically, the students were supposed to self-report
whether they perceived themselves as capable of using effective metacognitive
learning strategies. The participants were ... Actually, the variable turned out to be

Improving Reading and Reading Engagement in the 21st Century

International Research and Innovation

This book presents cutting-edge research findings in areas critical to advancing reading research in the 21st century context, including new literacies, reading motivation, strategy instruction, and reading intervention studies. While students’ reading performance is currently receiving unprecedented attention, there is a lack of research that adopts an international perspective and draws on research expertise from different parts of the world to present a concerted effort, discussing key research models and findings on how to improve reading education. Addressing this gap in the literature, the book also responds to the challenge of promoting higher levels of literacy, and supporting and developing readers who can enjoy and critique texts of every genre.

Findings of my studies, as outlined above, support the cross-cultural application
of motivation and cognitive strategy theories in Chinese reading comprehension.
Similar to the findings in English reading studies, reading motivation, strategy use
, and metacognition also play a significant role in Chinese students' reading
comprehension performance (Lau, 2006, 2012; Lau & Chan, 2003a, 2007; Lau &
Ho, 2016). At the same time, some cultural implications revealed in these studies

The International Handbook of Educational Research in the Asia-Pacific Region

The aim of the Handbook is to present readily accessible, but scholarly sources of information about educational research in the Asia-Pacific region. The scale and scope of the Handbook is such that the articles included in it provide substantive contributions to knowledge and understanding of education in the Asia region. In so doing, the articles present the problems and issues facing education in the region and the findings of research conducted within the region that contribute to the resolution of these problems and issues. Moreover, since new problems and issues are constantly arising, the articles in the Handbook also indicate the likely directions of future developments. The different articles within the Handbook seek to conceptualize the problems in each specific content area under review, provide an integration of the research conducted within that area, the theoretical basis of the research the practical implications of the research and the contribution of the research towards the resolution of the problems identified. Thus, the articles do not involve the reporting of newly conducted research, but rather require a synthesis of the research undertaken in a particular area, with reference to the research methods employed and the theoretical frameworks on which the research is based. In general, the articles do not advocate a single point of view, but rather, present alternative points of view and comment on the debate and disagreements associated with the conduct and findings of the research. Furthermore, it should be noted, that the Handbook is not concerned with research methodology, and only considers the methods employed in inquiry in so far as the particular methods of research contribute to the effective investigation of problems and issues that have arisen in the conduct and provision of education at different levels within the region.

Van Kraayenoord noted that while many similarities were found in the study
between LD and NLD readers in terms of metacognition, reading and causal
attributions, the findings suggested that students with LD need assistance in
particular aspects of their reading and help in building a more positive self image.
Chan ( 1994) similarly studied the relationship between motivation, strategic
learning and reading achievement in students with and without learning

The Effectiveness of Methadone Maintenance Treatment

Patients, Programs, Services, and Outcome

Legislators, journalists and concerned citizens in general, when consider ing what to do about the plague of heroin addiction in large cities, ask an obvious question: "Is methadone treatment effective?" This question is a critical one since maintenance with methadone is at present the only prac tical alternative to leaving tens of thousands (in New York City, hundreds of thousands) of untreated addicts on the streets. Other treatments, although effective for limited groups, could not conceivably be expanded to stop heroin use in as much as 10% of the addicted population. The present study, sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, was undertaken to provide an authoritative answer to this question. Under the direction of a distinguished expert, the evaluation team made an inten sive examination of techniques and outcomes in six different methadone programs located in New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore, and followed this by two yhears of data analysis and literature review. The present re port is the product of this work. The primary conclusion-namely that methadone treatment is substan tially effective in reducing heroin use and associated criminal behavior-is consistent with the findings of several previous independent evaluations.

The fact that the incidence of opiate and nonopiate abuse continued to decline
with length of time in treatment (even after4 yearsor more) issignificant, as
itindicates that such longterm stayis effective. Several observations are germane
regarding the issueof the continued use ofopiate and nonopiate drugs during
methadone maintenance treatment. First, patterns of drug abusethat obtain
during treatment tend to be a function of the drug abuse history.1 Patients who

Geometric topology

proceedings of the Geometric Topology Conference held at Park City, Utah, Febr. 19-22, 1974

BY HERMAN GLUCK li INTRODUCTION • Are closed surfaces rigid? Euler
thought so, and conjectured in 1766, "A closed spacial figure allows no changes,
as long as it is not ripped apart" [6], and expanded on this in letters to Lagrange
in 1770. But the conjecture has not yet yielded, and is surely one of the oldest
and most beautiful unsolved problems in geometry in the large. What is the
evidence in its favor? The experimental evidence is of two sorts. Most cardboard

International Handbook of Educational Evaluation

Part One: Perspectives / Part Two: Practice

Thomas Kellaghan Educational Research Centre, St. Patrick's College, Dublin, Ireland Daniel L. Stufflebeam The Evaluation Center, Western Michigan University, Ml, USA Lori A. Wingate The Evaluation Center, Western Michigan University, Ml, USA Educational evaluation encompasses a wide array of activities, including student assessment, measurement, testing, program evaluation, school personnel evalua tion, school accreditation, and curriculum evaluation. It occurs at all levels of education systems, from the individual student evaluations carried out by class room teachers, to evaluations of schools and districts, to district-wide program evaluations, to national assessments, to cross-national comparisons of student achievement. As in any area of scholarship and practice, the field is constantly evolving, as a result of advances in theory, methodology, and technology; increasing globalization; emerging needs and pressures; and cross-fertilization from other disciplines. The beginning of a new century would seem an appropriate time to provide a portrait of the current state of the theory and practice of educational evaluation across the globe. It is the purpose of this handbook to attempt to do this, to sketch the international landscape of educational evaluation - its conceptual izations, practice, methodology, and background, and the functions it serves. The book's 43 chapters, grouped in 10 sections, provide detailed accounts of major components of the educational evaluation enterprise. Together, they provide a panoramic view of an evolving field.

International Handbook of Behavior Modification and Therapy

The rapid growth of behavior therapy over the past 20 years has been well doc umented. Yet the geometric expansion of the field has been so great that it deserves to be recounted. We all received our graduate training in the mid to late 1960s. Courses in behavior therapy were then a rarity. Behavioral training was based more on informal tutorials than on systematic programs of study. The behavioral literature was so circumscribed that it could be easily mastered in a few months of study. A mere half-dozen books (by Wolpe, Lazarus, Eysenck, Ullmann, and Krasner) more-or-Iess comprised the behavioral library in the mid- 1960s. Semirial works by Ayllon and Azrin, Bandura, Franks, and Kanfer in 1968 and 1969 made it only slightly more difficult to survey the field. Keeping abreast of new developments was not very difficult, as Behaviour Research and Therapy and the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis were the only regular outlets for behavioral articles until the end of the decade, when Behavior Therapy and Be havior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry first appeared. We are too young to be maudlin, but "Oh for the good old days!" One of us did a quick survey of his bookshelves and stopped counting books with behavior or behavioral in the titles when he reached 100. There were at least half again as many behavioral books without those words in the title.

Exchange Rates and International Financial Economics

History, Theories, and Practices

The recent financial crisis has troubled the US, Europe, and beyond, and is indicative of the integrated world in which we live. Today, transactions take place with the use of foreign currencies, and their values affect the nations' economies and their citizens' welfare. Exchange Rates and International Financial Economics provides readers with the historic, theoretical, and practical knowledge of these relative prices among currencies. While much of the previous work on the topic has been simply descriptive or theoretical, Kallianiotis gives a unique and intimate understanding of international exchange rates and their place in an increasingly globalized world.

His research is focused on international finance, the financial markets, the
European Union, and business in general, where he has published over 200
articles in different journals, including Quarterly Economic Review, Greek
Economic Review, Economicos Tachydromos, International Journal of

International Handbook of Research in Arts Education

Providing a distillation of knowledge in the various disciplines of arts education (dance, drama, music, literature and poetry and visual arts), this essential handbook synthesizes existing research literature, reflects on the past, and contributes to shaping the future of the respective and integrated disciplines of arts education. While research can at times seem distant from practice, the Handbook aims to maintain connection with the live practice of art and of education, capturing the vibrancy and best thinking in the field of theory and practice. The Handbook is organized into 13 sections, each focusing on a major area or issue in arts education research.

University of Turku, Finland Most of the research reports published in art
education in Finland are based on dissertations written at the universities
preparing art teachers, the University of Art and Design Helsinki UIAH and the
University of Lapland in Rovaniemi. There is a strong emphasis on
environmental and community-based art education in Rovaniemi. For example,
