Nosotros y Los Otros...

The Trickster and the Paranormal

Paranormal and supernatural events have been reported for millennia. They have fostered history’s most important cultural transformations (e.g., via the miracles of Moses, Jesus, Mohammed). Paranormal phenomena are frequently portrayed in the world’s greatest art and literature, as well as in popular TV shows and movies. Most adults in the U.S. believe in them. Yet they have a marginal place in modern culture. No university departments are devoted to studying psychic phenomena. In fact, a panoply of scientists now aggressively denounces them. These facts present a deeply puzzling situation. But they become coherent after pondering the trickster figure, an archaic being found worldwide in mythology and folklore. The trickster governs paradox and the irrational, but his messages are concealed. This book draws upon theories of the trickster from anthropology, folklore, sociology, semiotics, and literary criticism. It examines psychic phenomena and UFOs and explains why they are so problematical for science.

Meditation of Iqbal and Afghanistan

Mohammad Iqbal (1877-1938) is one of the preeminent writers of the Indo-Pakistan subcontinent. Indeed, the attention he has received from numerous writers, translators, and critics from Western as well as Islamic countries testifi es to his stature as a world literary fi gure. Most of Allama Iqbal's writings were devoted to a revival of Islam & Afghanistan. While his primary reputation is that of a poet, Iqbal has not lacked admirers for his philosophical thought. Similar in theme to Dante's 'Divine Comedy', it relates the poet's ascent through all realms of thought and experience, guided by the 13th-century poet Maulana Jalaludin Mohammad Balkhi (Rumi). He has in fact been called "the most serious Muslim philosophical thinker of modem times." The frequently used appellation of "poet-philosopher" is thus well deserved. The hyphen in the phrase is all-important: Iqbal's poetry and philosophy do not exist in isolation from each other; they are integrally related, his poetry serving as a vehicle for his thought. Iqbal wrote poetry in Urdu and Dari (old Persian), and several collections in each language exist. In the following page a life-sketch of Iqbal is followed by a brief treatment of some of the major themes and literary features of his poetry.

Cruising the Big U

Voyaging through the Americas

Jo and Ade spent over three fantastic years crusing the Big U in a 43' Selene Trawler, Wandering Star. Besides having fun, their vision was to demonstrate that you don't have to cross oceans and go around the world to have the incredible adventure of a lifetime.

Peralta Theatre (the rebuilt, historic old opera house) and numerous parties and
happy hours with the cruising community. New Year's Eve is set with a special

Amranese

We live in a society now where the shorter the expression, the better. Amranese is a new form of poetry streamlined to coincide with such demands. As a child I would write and say what would come to mind. My family found my expressions to be very original and said that I spoke my own language. They named this newly formed language, Amranese, and it has stuck with me sense. I decided to take this nickname and turn it into an expression of poetry that is simple and direct. This poetry is a way of condensing relative concepts with using only two lines and up to two words per line.
