Working with Qualitative Data

Working with Qualitative Data provides a practical and accessible introduction to how to develop and apply strategies for the analysis of qualitative data by exploring the ways in which analysis is related to all aspects of research. By situating analysis in the context of the whole research process, this book helps the reader to introduce an analytical component to every stage of doing research: from designing a project, reviewing the literature, through the various stages of gathering data, to the process of writing-up. Through practical examples the book maps out strategies for developing analytic frameworks in relation to all aspects of research, and demonstrates the ways in which such frameworks can be used in relation to various sorts of data. In contrast to existing qualitative data analysis texts, this book offers a unified approach to the process of analysis within qualitative research. It will be of great use to students and researchers across the full range of social, health and education sciences.

The analysis of 'themes' in relation to data, such as interview transcripts,
observation schedules, fieldnotes, photographs, and so on, is often one of the
first things students refer to when they are asked to describe what qualitative
analysis means. Indeed, the reader may recall the definition of 'analysis' provided
by Marshall and Rossman (2006) that we presented in Chapter 1. In this
definition, 'themes' were offered as a key aspect of qualitative analysis. As we use
it here, the term ...

The MIT Encyclopedia of the Cognitive Sciences

A landmark, comprehensive reference work that represents the methodological and theoretical diversity of this changing field.

Although even preschool children have some metacognitive knowledge, marked
developmental progress occurs in all these areas and, indeed, continues to be
made in adolescence and beyond (e.g., Brown et al. 1983; Schneider ... Not
surprisingly, the correlation between metamemory (e.g., strategy knowledge) and
strategy use is typically higher than that between metamemory and performance,
confirming that the links between metacognition and task success are indeed
complex.

The Effectiveness of Promotion Agencies at Attracting Foreign Direct Investment

Investment promotion agencies (IPAs) exist in almost all countries around the world, but there has been no global attempt to determine whether they have been able to significantly influence the investor's decision to locate in one country rather than another. 'The Effectiveness of Promotion Agencies at Attracting Foreign Direct Investment' is the first empirical study of the effectiveness of these agencies in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI).This study finds that promotion is unambiguously associated with greater FDI flows. The effectiveness of promotion, however, depends on: • the quality of the investment climate, market size • the level of development of the country • the IPA's budget and type of activities it carries out • communication with the highest level of policymakers and support from the private sector. An important resource, 'The Effectiveness of Promotion Agencies at Attracting Foreign Direct Investment' provides many lessons about how to carry out effective investment promotion.

The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Number Theory

This book is based on the AMS Short Course, The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Number Theory, held in Orono, Maine, in August 1991. This Short Course provided some views into the great breadth of applications of number theory outside cryptology and highlighted the power and applicability of number-theoretic ideas. Because number theory is one of the most accessible areas of mathematics, this book will appeal to a general mathematical audience as well as to researchers in other areas of science and engineering who wish to learn how number theory is being applied outside of mathematics. All of the chapters are written by leading specialists in number theory and provides excellent introduction to various applications.

ANDREWS. 1. Introduction. This paper will be somewhat more restricted than the
title implies. We shall concern ourselves only with additive number theory and
how it relates to statistical mechanics. Also it must be noted at the onset that this
paper was presented in a session entitled The Unreasonable Effectiveness of
Number Theory. The course description suggests that thirty years ago all

The Relative Effectiveness of 10 Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Programs in the United States

Reports results of interviews of youths treated in 11 adolescent programs that had been identified as having suggestive evidence of effectiveness, to learn whether they had better outcomes than they would have had at other facilities.

A small number of cases were admitted to their respective treatment programs
less than 12 months prior to March 2002. Because these cases had no 12-month
assessments in the dataset, they were excluded by design. Since we assume in
this report that treatment effects are constant over the period of study, we can also
assume that the exclusion of these cases introduces no bias into our treatment
effect estimates. More problematic are those cases excluded because they were

American Icons

From Madison to Manhattan, the Art of Benny Andrews, 1948-1997

Benny Andrews is a painter, printmaker, cultural leader and arts advocate. His work is in the permanent collections of well over 30 major museums, including the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, the Metropolitan Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian Institute. Born into a sharecropper family in 1930 in Madison, Georgia, he is an African American who considers himself a product of his American social and cultural environment. Though he has lived in New York City for the past 40 years, his art still reflects the experiences and memories he associates with his family life in the South (he still maintains a studio in Georgia).

58) The second visit he remembered was made by Governor Herman Tal- madge
. Benny, like many other students, was incensed to learn that the governor was
coming to their campus and that all students were required to attend his speech
in the college chapel. As he explained: "He and his father, Eugene Talmadge,
had been the epitome of racism all my life; the name Talmadge was synonymous
with racism. Every gubernatorial campaign run by the Talmadges was laden with
