Fourier Transforms in the Complex Domain

With the aid of Fourier-Mellin transforms as a tool in analysis, the authors were able to attack such diverse analytic questions as those of quasi-analytic functions, Mercer's theorem on summability, Milne's integral equation of radiative equilibrium, the theorems of Munz and Szasz concerning the closure of sets of powers of an argument, Titchmarsh's theory of entire functions of semi-exponential type with real negative zeros, trigonometric interpolation and developments in polynomials of the form $\sum^N_1A_ne^{i\lambda_nx}$, lacunary series, generalized harmonic analysis in the complex domain, the zeros of random functions, and many others.

The Complex Dynamics of Economic Interaction

Essays in Economics and Econophysics

This volume contains a selection of contributions presented at the WEHIA02 (Workshop on Economies with Heterogeneous Interacting Agents), which was held at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Physics of Trieste, Italy, on May 29- 31, under the auspices of Exystence, Complex System network of excellence . WEHIA02 is the 7th edition of a workshop, which was held for the first time at the University of Ancona, Italy , on 1996 (1), as a one-week series of seminars for the Italian PhD program . Ancona hosted the event in the years 1997 and 1998 (2) , before it moved to Genoa 1999 (3), Marseille 2000 (4) , Maastricht 2001 (5), and finally to Trieste 2002. The 2003 workshop was held in Kid , Germany, while the next editions will be in Kyoto, Japan (2004) and Essex, UK (2005). The full list of participants, titles of the invited lectures, papers and posters of WEHIA can be found in http ://econ . dea. it/wehia2. The workshop has been always very informal aiming to put together sch- ars of different disciplines working on interaction of heterogeneous "so- thing " (economists, physicists, biologists) . To facilitate participation there has not been conference fee . It aimed to be a locus for communicate and exchange results and experiences . Several collaborations started with the Workshop and it is not without pride that the organizers claim such a result. The WEHIA has had two pars: a pars desiruens and a pars adestruens.

The Complex Religion of Teens

A Lifetime of Research Reveals how Adolescents Relate to Spiritual Matters

A lifetime of research reveals how adolescents relate to spiritual matters. This book provides insight into our teenagers. Youll learn about their brand of religion, how they express it, and how to nurture and mold it successfully.

Learning, Speech, and the Complex Effects of Punishment

Essays Honoring George J. Wischner

DONALD K. ROUTH WHAT THIS BOOK IS ABOUT A reader who happens onto this book on the library shelf may find the title a puzzle. Learning is one broad subject. Speech is another. And the "complex effects of punishment" might seem far afield from either. Perhaps, intrigued by this apparent diversity and wanting to discover what common theme underlies it, the reader may begin leafing through the chapters. The first one recounts a series of studies of rats-using learning techniques from the psychology laboratory, to be sure, but applied to the study of behavior genetics, sex differences, and aging. The second chapter has to do with young children's discrimination learning. Then, there is a chapter on learning sets. Next, there is a chapter on stuttering. Then the topic shifts back to the study of learning in rats. Then, there is a clinical chapter on punishment effects. Finally, there is a historically oriented essay on Iowa psychology graduates. Surely, by now the puzzled reader wants an explana tion of why such diversity belongs between the covers of a single book.

Advances in the Complex Variable Boundary Element Method

Since its inception by Hromadka and Guymon in 1983, the Complex Variable Boundary Element Method or CVBEM has been the subject of several theoretical adventures as well as numerous exciting applications. The CVBEM is a numerical application of the Cauchy Integral theorem (well-known to students of complex variables) to two-dimensional potential problems involving the Laplace or Poisson equations. Because the numerical application is analytic, the approximation exactly solves the Laplace equation. This attribute of the CVBEM is a distinct advantage over other numerical techniques that develop only an inexact approximation of the Laplace equation. In this book, several of the advances in CVBEM technology, that have evolved since 1983, are assembled according to primary topics including theoretical developments, applications, and CVBEM modeling error analysis. The book is self-contained on a chapter basis so that the reader can go to the chapter of interest rather than necessarily reading the entire prior material. Most of the applications presented in this book are based on the computer programs listed in the prior CVBEM book published by Springer-Verlag (Hromadka and Lai, 1987) and so are not republished here.

integral approaches can be used for this problem; a complex polynomial
approximation (see Section 2.6) is used in this model due to the significant
reduction in computational effort when compared to other BIEM requirements.

The Complex Forest

"Communities, Uncertainty, and Adaptive Collaborative Management"

The Complex Forest systematically examines the theory, processes, and early outcomes of a research and management approach called adaptive collaborative management (ACM). An alternative to positivist approaches to development and conservation that assume predictability in forest management, ACM acknowledges the complexity and unpredictability inherent in any forest community and the importance of developing solutions together with the forest peoples whose lives will be most affected by the outcomes. Building on earlier work that established the importance of flexible, collaborative approaches to sustainable forest management, The Complex Forest describes the work of ACM practitioners facing a broad range of challenges in diverse settings and attempts to identify the conditions under which ACM is most effective. Case studies of ACM in 33 forest sites in 11 countries together with Colfer's systematic comparison of results at each site indicate that human and institutional capabilities have been strengthened. In Zimbabwe, for example, the number of women involved in decisionmaking soared. In Nepal, community members detected and sanctioned dishonest community elites. In Cameroon and Bolivia, learning programs resulted in better conflict management. These are early results, but a wide range of recent research supports Colfer's belief that these new capabilities will eventually contribute to higher incomes and to sustainable improvements in the health of forests and forest peoples. The Complex Forest reinforces calls for change in the way we plan conservation and development programs, away from command-and-control approaches, toward ones that require bureaucratic flexibility and responsiveness, as well as greater local participation in setting priorities and problem solving.

The Complex Forest, which reports the results of this ambitious global project, is
divided into two parts: the second half (Appendix) presents the details of the 30
sites fi'om around the globe, and the first half presents the overall findings that Dr.

Painlevé Differential Equations in the Complex Plane

This book is the first comprehensive treatment of Painlevé differential equations in the complex plane. Starting with a rigorous presentation for the meromorphic nature of their solutions, the Nevanlinna theory will be applied to offer a detailed exposition of growth aspects and value distribution of Painlevé transcendents. The subsequent main part of the book is devoted to topics of classical background such as representations and expansions of solutions, solutions of special type like rational and special transcendental solutions, Bäcklund transformations and higher order analogues, treated separately for each of these six equations. The final chapter offers a short overview of applications of Painlevé equations, including an introduction to their discrete counterparts. Due to the present important role of Painlevé equations in physical applications, this monograph should be of interest to researchers in both mathematics and physics and to graduate students interested in mathematical physics and the theory of differential equations.

From the several possible methods applicable into this direction, we select the
singularity confinement method, being perhaps the most natural from the
complex analytic point of view. Having found examples of discrete Painlevé, we
