Genesis

Working from the conviction that Genesis can be read as a coherent whole, this commentary foregrounds the sophistication of Hebrew narrative art, in particular its depiction of plot and character, and the interpretative possibilities raised by its intertextuality. Apparently simple and independent episodes emerge as complex and interconnected, constantly challenging readers to readjust their assessments of characters and expectations of plot development. Approaching the text predominantly from the perspective of a 'first-time reader', this commentary underscores the narrative's surprises, ironies and innovations.

The Pagan Genesis of C.S. Lewis' Narnia Series

This thesis will examine the seven novels that comprise C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia, a children's series written in the 1950's. At the time these novels were written, C.S. Lewis was a devout Christian. However, there are many elements present in the Chronicles derived from non-Christian sources, which at first appearance may seem inappropriate for the purpose of entertaining and educating children. The pagan and traditional features will be discussed, including the talking animals who act as animal helpers, the mythological characters and the Celtic influences, revealing why these particular elements are crucial to the novels. Lewis' own childhood will be discussed, as it becomes evident that this is also an important influence on the Chronicles. Ultimately, the conclusion will show how C.S. Lewis justifies the inclusion of non-Christian sources in his stories for children, and how the pagan and Christian elements can be combined to complement each other. Research will show that pagan factors do not contradict the Christian messages that Lewis is conveying to the young reader. Lewis' own childhood will support the inclusion of such elements and prove that a child does not always interpret things in the same manner as an adult.

Modification of Mutagenesis Techniques to Enhance Isolation of High Producers of Citric Acid Mutants in Yarrowia Lipolytica

Colonies which exhibited significantly larger halo on the YEPG plates compared to the parent strain were isolated. Their acid production ability were reconfirmed on similar plates. Instead of growing isolated strains as shake flask cultures and assaying for their citric acid production capability, a more rapid method was developed. This involved removing agar plugs from the halo area of isolates grown on the YEPG plates using a cork borer. These plugs were then subjected to a 'freeae squeeze' regime to obtain samples for citric acid analysis by HPLC. [Authors' abstract].
