The advent of multicore processors has renewed interest in the idea of incorporating transactions into the programming model used to write parallel programs. This approach, known as transactional memory, offers an alternative, and hopefully better, way to coordinate concurrent threads. The ACI (atomicity, consistency, isolation) properties of transactions provide a foundation to ensure that con-current reads and writes of shared data do not produce inconsistent or incorrect results. At a higher level, a computation wrapped in a transaction executes atomically---either it completes successfully and commits its result in its entirety or it aborts. In addition, isolation ensures the transaction produces the same result as if no other transactions were executing concurrently. Although transactions are not a parallel programming panacea, they shift much of the burden of synchronizing and co-ordinating parallel computations from a programmer to a compiler, to a language runtime system, or to hardware. The challenge for the system implementers is to build an efficient transactional memory infrastructure. This book presents an overview of the state of the art in the design and implementation of transactional memory systems, as of early spring 2010.

25 janvier 2011, l'Egypte explose : Dix-huit jours de mobilisation, d'espoir, de violence aussi, qui aboutissent au départ, le 11 février, de Hosni Moubarak, au pouvoir depuis presque 30 ans. La boite de Pandore égyptienne s'est ouverte. Les mots se sont libérés. Mais les maux, eux, sont toujours là. Ceux d'un pays en surchauffe, dont les deux-tiers de la population a moins de 30 ans. Cette jeunesse qui a " fait " la révolution, et qui se retrouve en grande majorité sans emploi. Saura-t-elle guider son pays vers la démocratie ? La transition s'annonce compliquée : le régime de Moubarak laisse derrière lui un vide politique abyssal, où seuls les islamistes ont prospéré. Seront-ils les principaux bénéficiaires du changement ou bien la société civile longtemps anesthésiée va-t-elle se réveiller ? Quel rôle l'armée désormais au pouvoir jouera-t-elle dans ce processus ? Les bons indicateurs économiques (plus de 6% de croissance avant la révolution) n'arrivaient pas à masquer le fait que 40% de la population ne vit qu'avec environ 1,5 euro par jour. Qu'en sera-t-il dans une économie à genoux ? L'émigration clandestine vers l'Europe qui s'était développée ces dernières années risque-t-elle de s'accélérer ? La révolution égyptienne a aussi été celle du civisme et de la citoyenneté. " Dignité " et " fierté " en ont été avec " liberté " les mots emblématiques. Seront-ils suffisants pour effacer des décennies d'humiliations, de corruption, de paix mal assumée avec Israël, de tensions croissantes entre la majorité musulmane et la minorité chrétienne copte ? La religion, en particulier l'Islam, restera-t-elle la " valeur refuge " qu'elle était devenue pour les égyptiens ou bien les laïcs ont-ils une chance de se faire entendre ?
