The Relationship Between Executive Functions and Metacognitive Strategy Learning and Application

This project examined whether the executive functions of set maintenance and switching, as assessed by neuropsychological testing, were predictors of set maintenance and switching within a more ecologically valid task that used metacognitive strategies during reading comprehension tasks as a framework for evaluation. Gaze times to key words during reading were used as an indirect measure of strategy use. A few significant relationships were found between set maintenance and set switching on the neuropsychological measures and the strategy learning and application tasks. Participants were more likely to switch to appropriate strategies in a situation in which they were given free choice of strategies to use, and in which characteristics of the text pulled for the use of a particular strategy. In contrast, participants were less consistent with expected strategy use when they had just learned a strategy and were asked explicitly to apply it to a text that did not pull for use of a particular strategy. Factors such as visual scanning, motor speed, working memory, and passage comprehension affected the relationship between executive functions and the more ecologically valid task.

Metacognitive Approaches to Developing Oracy

Developing Speaking and Listening with Young Children

The acquisition of speech and language represent significant achievements for all children. These aspects of child development have received substantial attention in the research literature and a considerable body of theoretical knowledge exists to chart progress from infancy to maturity. Cross-cultural studies have identified the common purposes served by the acquisition of oral language by children, and the essential similarity in the sequence through which speech develops irrespective of geography and culture. What is less clear is precisely ‘how’ children learn to say what they mean and ‘how’ teachers and parents can support and enhance the development of meaningful speech in their children. Until now, children’s speech has been underused as a means of promoting learning in the formal school setting. New requirements within the National Curriculum are trying to address this gap, but there remains a lack of clarity as to what this means for practice, and how it relates to the broad base of curricular objectives. This book brings together a body of work, from different countries; it offers an improved understanding of how strategies for developing speaking and listening may impact metacognitive awareness, and raise standards of literacy and dialogic thinking for all children. This book was previously published as a special issue of Early Child Development and Care.

Educational Research and Innovation Critical Maths for Innovative Societies The Role of Metacognitive Pedagogies

The Role of Metacognitive Pedagogies

This report looks at a number of published studies on mathematics education that try to understand which education and skills are appropriate for innovative societies.

metacognition. affect. learning. and. achievement? Studies highlight the
relationship between metacognition and academic achievement. In the last
decade, it has become widely accepted that metacognition plays a crucial role in
school ... For example, when reading a “simple” sentence one can comprehend it
without consciously applying metacognitive strategies, whereas in reading a
complicated text, the application of metacognitive strategies is essential (Carlisle
and Rice, 2002).

Metacognitive Awareness and Performance on Assessment Tasks in Reading

This book provides a theoretical-practical framework that links assessment practice to learning theory by synthesizing three theoretical axis of learning: Schema theory - emphasizing the role of prior knowledge in learning; Metacognitive Awareness theory - profiling an expert reader; and the Vygotskian notion of the Zone of Proximal Development - extending and facilitating learners' cognitive abilities and performance by providing a "psychological tool." Increasing learners' metacognitive awareness by applying MetaCognitive Awareness Guidance to reading assessment tasks will not only facilitates students' learning and improve their reading comprehension but will also increase their chances of internalizing the guidance components and applying them in changing learning situations. The research also emphasizes on how teachers' perspectives, thoughts and opinions play a critical role in applying MCAG in teaching. The book focuses on reading assessment that better serve the goals of reliability and validity, and facilitate the kind of assessment that will benefit our students the most, the kind of assessment to which our students are entitled.

Aquavetplan 2001

Disease Strategy : Furunculosis

AQUAVETPLAN is a series of technical response plans that describe the proposed Australian approach to an aquatic animal disease emergency event. It comprises a series of manuals outlining national emergency preparedness and response and control strategies for aquatic animal disease emergencies in Australia. The manuals provide guidance based on sound analysis, linking policy, strategies, implementation, coordination and emergency management plans.
