Pengasuhan atau pola asuh erat kaitannya dengan karakter orang tua. Pendekatan ala teori perilaku (behaviorism) menonjolkan perlakuan fisik"" yang bisa diukur, bisa dilihat, dan bersiiat eksternal. Anak baru mau patuh bila diberi hukuman pada perilaku yang tidak diharapkan. Anak akan termotivasi belajar bila diberi hadiah (reward). Pengalaman batin, kesadaran, inspirasi, kasih sayang, motivasi intrinsik, dan semua hal yang menjadi blue-print khas insaniah seolah dinafikan begitu saja. Tugas orang tua mengawal anak-anak tumbuh memang tidak ringan. Kadang kita menyesali dan menangis sedih ketika melihat betapa banyak tindakan kita yang menyakiti hati mereka. Betapa sering kita mengabaikan sinyal-sinyal kebutuhan mereka. Betapa cepat waktu berlalu sampai tahu-tahu semua itu terpola menjadi karakter. Tanpa sadar kita mengulang-ulang kesalahan yang sama, padahal kita benci bila anak melakukan kesalahan berulang-ulang.
