Students in my Introduction to Women's Studies courses at Emory University in
Atlanta typically expressed both exhilaration and frustration with what they were
learning as the semester unfolded. The exhilaration stemmed from their seeing
how the social construction of gender, race, class, and sexuality shapes everyday
