Terminology Services and the DDC: the High-Level Thesaurus and Beyond

The presentation discusses emerging services for providing controlled terminologies and interoperability between them, the role of the High-Level Thesaurus (HILT) project, and the application of Semantic Web technologies. HILT uses the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) as a terminology mapping spine or switching language between different monolingual (English) subject vocabularies. Pilot services offered by HILT include disambiguation of terms suggested by end-users, spell-checking of user terms, improving the precision of item-level subject searching by suggesting appropriate terms, and selecting catalogues for searching where the collection has subject strengths matching the user's search strategy. Examples from the Scottish Collections Network (SCONE) and the Intute service are given.
