Everyday Problem-Based Learning

Quick Projects to Build Problem-Solving Fluency

Educators know that problem-based learning answers that perennial student question: “When will I ever use this in real life?” Faced with a meaty problem to solve, students finally “get” why they need to learn the content and are energized to do so. But here’s the exciting part: problem-based learning doesn’t require weeks of study or an end-of-year project. In this book, Brian Pete and Robin Fogarty show how you can use problem-based learning as a daily approach to helping students learn authentic and relevant content and skills. They explain how to engage students in each of the seven steps in the problem-based learning model, so students learn how to develop good questions, launch their inquiry, gather information, organize their information, create evidence, present their findings, and assess their learning. Using practical examples, they also describe how to help students master these seven important thinking skills: develop, analyze, reason, understand, solve, apply, and evaluate. To put all this in context, the authors offer seven “PBL in a Nutshell” lessons that can easily be incorporated in a single classroom period. Depth of thinking and ease of implementation--this is problem-based learning at its best.

Unaware they are wolf-shifters, Rayne finds herself fantasizing about all of them, each in a different way. But, she's not at Shady Pines Lodge for romance, nor could she ever choose between them. The Whitmore brothers, Caleb, Nick, and Dalton, are thrilled to finally have found their mate in spunky Rayne and will do everything they can to persuade her to stay and play! Although Nick wants her all to himself, that's not the way of the pack. If he wants her, he’ll have to share her with his brothers. At least, for now. With luck, he’ll manage to convince her that there’s more pleasure in being a one-wolf woman.

Cooperative learning

a study on processes and effects of cooperation between primary school children

Cooperative learning is presented as a process that should be regulated by a
teacher who controls the contents and ways of cooperation either directly, or
more indirectly by means of, for instance, presenting a model. The teacher is the
most important representative of "public criteria" in an educational setting, the
contents that should be learned and the way they should be handled. In
cooperative learning partners, in part, can take over this function of being a

Ability grouping and cooperative learning

The Argument against Cooperative Learning for Talented Students Ann
Robinson Cooperative learning has arrived. The popular press as well as
specialized academic journals are recommending cooperative learning as the
educational antidote for the achievment ills and motivational malaise of our
students (Bower, 1989; Johnson & Johnson, 1983; Parker, 1985). Educational
Leadership featured cooperative learning in the 1980's and in January 1990
devoted a special issue to it.
