Several hundred Malay youth under the leadership of Wan Ali and the
flamboyant Abdullah Che Dat (CD Abdullah) responded to a MRLA recruiting
drive, as the Party were well aware of the propaganda value of a Malay unit in its
organisation. These volunteers, about 500 of them, were then formed into the
10th Independent (Malay) Regiment. However, the new Regiment did not last
