Highland and homestead cultivation of SFCs have traditionally been the domain
of women in most parts of Sri Lanka (Wijaya & Jayatilaka 1989). Whether the
higher status for these crops - and with it a much greater degree of
commercialisation - will give more self- confidence to women (Jayaweera et al.
1990) or see a change in the household division of labour and responsibility as
