Living Sharia

Law and Practice in Malaysia

Drawing on ethnographic research, Living Sharia examines the role of sharia in the sociopolitical processes of contemporary Malaysia. The book traces the contested implementation of Islamic family and criminal laws and sharia economics to provide cultural frameworks for understanding sharia among Muslims and non-Muslims. Timothy Daniels explores how the way people think about sharia is often entangled with notions about race, gender equality, nationhood, liberal pluralism, citizenship, and universal human rights. He reveals that Malaysians ideas about sharia are not isolated fromnor always opposed toliberal pluralism and secularism. Living Sharia will be of interest to scholars as well as to policy makers, consultants, and professionals working with global NGOs.

Sharia Dynamics

Islamic Law and Sociopolitical Processes

This multidisciplinary volume explores the role of Islamic law within the dynamic processes of postcolonial transformation, nation building, and social reform. Here, eleven international scholars examine Islamic law in several contemporary sociopolitical contexts, focusing specifically on Malaysia, Indonesia, Pakistan, China, Tunisia, Nigeria, the United States, and the International Islamic Fiqh Academy (IIFA) of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The contributors also address the entanglement of Islamic law and ethics with the history of Muslim religious discourses, shifts toward modernity, gender relations, and efforts to construct exclusive or plural national communities. Sharia Dynamics, at once enchanting and enlightening, is a must-read for scholars of contemporary Islam.

The Yogi Who Missed His Way

Sex and Spirituality in D.h. Lawrence

SEX & SPIRITUALITY MEET IN D.H. LAWRENCE All the sex scenes, talking about sex, and thinking about it in D.H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover amount to less than a quarter of the famous notorious novel, so what else is it about? Discover how yoga and the chakras influenced D.H. Lawrence and how the philosophy of yoga can be used to shed light on characters in novels, and persona in poetry. Australian author David Taylor has been an English teacher at high school level for over 40 years. He has taught some of Lawrence's works, and read others with varying degrees of interest and enjoyment. He was first impelled to write about Lawrence after watching a BBC telemovie entitled The Trial Of Lady Chatterley. This was about the trial of Penguin books after they had published the first uncensored version of Lawrence's novel in the early 1960's. Having watched the programme David decided to re-read the novel, after which he then asked himself the question, if all the sex scenes, talking about sex, and thinking about it, amount to less than a quarter of the most famous novel about sex of the twentieth century, what else is it about? After beginning his research David became aware of the level of involvement Lawrence had with ideas and concepts from Yoga, particularly the chakras. David's own Ph.D thesis had been centred on the way in which a number of the philosophical aspects of Yoga could be used as an analytical tool for examining character in novels and plays and persona in poetry. The original question David asked and the focus of his Ph.D thesis have combined to produce this ground-breaking book.
