Adapting Social Science to the Changing Focus of International Agricultural Research

Proceedings of a Rockefeller Foundation--ILCA Social Science Research Fellows Workshop Held at ILCA, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 14-18 November 1994

In recent years, financial support for research to generate new agricultural
technologies for developing countries has been declining. The decrease in
funding occurred partly because donors are not convinced that there have been
sufficient returns on their investments in research. Donors, as key stakeholders,
are also becoming more directly involved in influencing the direction and priority
setting of research efforts. Agricultural research institutes are being challenged to
demonstrate ...

Model Checking Software

16th International SPIN Workshop, Grenoble, France, June 26-28, 2009, Proceedings

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 16th International SPIN workshop on Model Checking Software, SPIN 2009, held in Grenoble, France, in June 2009. The 15 revised full papers presented together with 3 tool papers and 4 invited talks were carefully reviewed and selected from 41 submissions. The papers cover theoretical and algorithmic foundations as well as tools for software model checking by addressing theoretical advances and empirical evaluations related to state-space and path exploration techniques, as implemented in software verification tools.

Electron Correlation and Magnetism in Narrow-Band Systems

Proceedings of the Third Taniguchi International Symposium, Mount Fuji, Japan, November 1–5, 1980

Speech by Toyosaburo Taniguchi Welcome my friends to the Third International Symposium, Division on the Theory of Condensed Matter, of the Taniguchi Foundation. The need is now greater than ever for Japan to consider how to strengthen and foster international understanding between nations, peoples and societies, and how to contribute towards the establishment of peace and prosperity in the world. For more than twenty years, I have been supporting a symposium on mathe matics in which distinguished scholars from allover the world have engaged in free discussions. In this symposium, all the participants live together in community style. I have heard from members of some of these study groups that this type of setup has helped to strengthen their ties and relationships with their colleagues on a personal basis. What developed in the mathematics group led me to reorganize and strengthen the Taniguchi Foundation only a few years ago through additional funding. In order to effectively translate the objectives of the Foundation into action with the funds available, it becomes necessary to select those fields which are not necessarily in the limelight of popular interest, which means those fields which, I am afraid, are low in funding. I would rather choose from modest unimpressive academic fields than for the Foundation, projects those that stand out in gaudy, gorgeous popular acclaim.

1. Introduction One-dimensional models occupy a special niche in the theory of
highly correlated systems: on the one hand, essentially all the non-trivial models
that can be exactly solved are one-dimensional, but on the other hand, the
physics that such solutions reveal is of a special one-dimensional kind, without
parallel in the higher-dimensional world. Indeed, although the original motivation
for studying such models was as a "warming-up" exercise before tackling the real

Learning Software Organizations. Methodology and Applications

11th International Conference on Software Engineering and Knowledge Engineering, SEKE'99 Kaiserslautern, Germany, June 16-19, 1999 Proceedings

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed and revised post-conference documentation of the 11th International Conference on Software Engineering and Knowledge Engineering, SEKE'99, held in Kaiserslautern, Germany in June 1999. The book provides a unique overview of current activities, approaches, and trends in learning software organizations. The first part gives an overview on the topic, covering foundations in the software engineering domain, enabling techniques for organizational learning, and learning support techniques. The second and the third part of the book on methodology and applications present thoroughly revised full papers of the most interesting papers on learning software organizations presented during SEKE'99 and its satellite workshop LSO'99.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed and revised post-conference documentation of the 11th International Conference on Software Engineering and Knowledge Engineering, SEKE'99, held in Kaiserslautern, Germany in June 1999.

Strategic Management of Marine Ecosystems

Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Strategic Management of Marine Ecosystems, Nice, France, 1-11 October, 2003

The demand for advanced management methods and tools for marine ecosystems is increasing worldwide. Today, many marine ecosystems are significantly affected by disastrous pollution from industrial, agricultural, municipal, transportational, and other anthropogenic sources. The issues of environmental integrity are especially acute in the Mediterranean and Red Sea basins, the cradle of modern civilization. The drying of the Dead Sea is one of the most vivid examples of environmental disintegration with severe negative consequences on the ecology, industry, and wildlife in the area. Strategic management and coordination of international remedial and restoration efforts is required to improve environmental conditions of marine ecosystems in the Middle East as well as in other areas. The NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) held in Nice in October 2003 was designed to: (1) provide a discussion forum for the latest developments in the field of environmentally-conscious strategic management of marine environments, and (2) integrate expertise of ecologists, biologists, economists, and managers from European, American, Canadian, Russian, and Israeli organizations in developing a framework for strategic management of marine ecosystems. The ASI addressed the following issues: Key environmental management problems in exploited marine ecosystems; Measuring and monitoring of municipal, industrial, and agricultural effluents; Global contamination of seawaters and required remedial efforts; Supply Chain Management approach for strategic coastal zones management and planning; Development of environmentally friendly technologies for coastal zone development; Modeling for sustainable aquaculture; and Social, political, and economic challenges in marine ecosystem management.

Strategic Management of the Manufacturing Value Chain

Proceedings of the International Conference of the Manufacturing Value-Chain August ‘98, Troon, Scotland, UK

Today the Scottish electronics industry employs 40,000 people directly and a further 30,000 in the supply infrastructure. There are now more than 550 electronic manufacturing and supplier companies in ' Silicon Glen'. In terms of the contribution to the economy, electronics is by far the most valuable industry. Its value in 1996 was approximately £ 10billion and accounted for more than half of Scotland's exports. The major product groupings within the industry include: • PCs, laptops and workstations • Disk drives, cable harnessing • Printers, keyboards and peripherals • Semiconductor devices and PCBs • TV, VCRs, CDs, stereos and other consumer electronics • Cellular phones and telecommunications products • A TMs and funds transfer systems • Networking and security systems • Navigation and sonar systems • Microwave products • Power supplies • Software and compilers Many of these companies are multi-national OEMs, who came to Scotland as inward investing companies. Early inward investing companies were from USA, followed by companies from Japan, and more recently from Taiwan and Korea. An important segment of the industry is involved in the manufacture of computers, including IBM, Compaq, Digital and Sun. In fact approximately 40% of the PCs sold in Europe are built in Scotland. With five of the world's top eight computer manufacturers locating a manufacturing base in Scotland there has been an attraction for foreign companies keen to provide service for these multinationals. In 1995/96 the supply base output was worth £1.
