The Text Linguistics of Qur'anic Discourse

An Analysis

Text Linguistics of Qur'anic Discourse: A Text Analysis offers one of the first comprehensive investigations in the new academic discipline of Qu'ranic text linguistics, applying Western linguistics theory to Qur'anic discourse. Its informed and detailed analysis of Qur'anic discourse covers key elements including (i) the texture of the macro Qur'anic text, (ii) the cohesion and coherence systems of the Qur'anic text, (iii) the major notions of the macro Qur'anic text such as intertextuality, semantic relatedness, and thematic sequentiality, (iv) the macro Qur'anic textual features of ellipsis and repetition, and (v) the contextual, co-textual, grammatical, and semantic factors involved in the macro Qur'anic text. The value of European theoretical linguistics to the analysis of the Qur'anic text at a macro level has been overlooked in the academic literature to date. This book addresses this research gap, providing a key resource for students and scholars of linguistics and specifically working in Arabic or Qur'anic Studies.

Moses and Pharaoh's Magicians: A Discursive Analysis of the Qur'anic Narratives in the Light of Late Antique Texts and Traditions

Abstract : This paper provides a comparative analysis of the Qur'anic narratives of Moses and Pharaoh's magicians and the Biblical narrative as transmitted through the targummim and Peshitta, and Jewish and Christian interpretive traditions. This analysis views these narratives as a means of better understanding the discursive development of the earliest Qur'anic community and how they assisted that community in making sense of its world. Viewing how the Qur'an deliberately crafts these narratives gives insights into the circumstances and context of its revelation, particularly as it makes deliberate choices related to textual readings. Such choices, I argue, impacted the discursive norms and attitudes of the community. Presenting the chronological relationship of the narratives illustrates such discursive development. This paper analyses the similarities and differences in the Biblical and Qur'anic narratives, focusing particularly on the narratological roles of Aaron, the nobles, and the magicians, to illustrate the homiletic and exhortatory messages impacting that discourse development. The effective use of these narratives as models for the ethical and moral behaviour of the believing community and its identity formation cannot be understated.

Qur'anic Text

Towards a Retrieval System

The feeling that Islamic literature deserves and requires an Islamic classification dcheme has been met with a widespread dissatisfaction among information scientists in the Muslim world. However, indexing the classical Qur'anic exegeses and Hadith collections still requires an initial operation list of both subject headings of both Qur'anic and Hadith texts. The book is based on an investigation of the terminology in the Qur'anic text for the purpose of designing a retrieval system. It makes use of conceptual verses and words as partial examples for the required task. These examples are used to test the factors affecting the design at both the documentary and computation levels. At the documentary level, the examples are used to examine the effects of Qur'anic terminology on the commentators and to see how it affects the performance of the retrieval system. It also examines the characteristics of the Qur'anic vocabulary, against the problems known to be encountered in constructing an efficient retrieval system. On the computation level, the examples are used to examine the possibility of the Qur'an in its stylistic form being processed by the computer. as a result, the study offers guidelines and recommendations with two examples for the natural and social sciences as a model for constructing a retrieval system for Qur'anic text.
