"A Proposed Model for Anchorage Adult Civic Education explored how the theories and practices of adult education can be used to create civic education initiatives to instruct Anchorage residents about their local, state, and federal civic processes. Evaluations of civic leadership programs were reviewed and eleven Anchorage civic leaders were given a semi-structured interview about the effectiveness of formal civic education and the skills, information, subjects, and components to include in this type of education. To reach as many Anchorage citizens as possible, five civic education methods are proposed: a program, a workshop, an English-as-a-Second language class, public service announcements or commercials, and an interactive website. These initiatives would teach civic information and skills by incorporating the adult education practices and theories of andragogy, critical thinking, self-directed learning, and mentoring. The purpose of these civic education initiatives is to increase Anchorage citizens' abilities to participate in the democratic decision-making processes that affect their neighborhood, their city, their state, and their nation"--Leaf [iv].
